This study guide is intended to encourage an understanding of the consequences of pathologic processes on the structure and function of the human body. Specially desined to parallel McCance and Huether: Pathophysiology: The Biologic Basis for Disease in Adults and Children, 5th edition, this helpful study guide and workbook is just what you need for in-depth study and review of the most important facts and information on pathophysiology.
  • The Study Guide includes learning objectives with corresponding textbook page numbers for review.
  • Learning objectives keep you focused on essential information.
  • Special Memory Check! Boxes help you remember key points from the text.
  • Concise summaries of key concepts highlight "must know" information.
  • A practice examination for each chapter helps you test your understanding.
  • Case studies with critical thinking questions in the chapters that cover disorders allow you to exercise your clinical-reasoning skills.
  • Answers to the practice examination and critical thinking questions are provided in the back.

The book contains predominantly color illustrations, with some black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Don Johnson
This third edition textbook is divided into two parts: central concepts related to cells and tissues, and pathophysiologic alterations. Part one gives an in-depth view of cells, genes and common genetic diseases, cell injury, fluid and electrolytes and acid-base balance, immunity, inflammation and wound healing, coping and illness, and oncogenesis. Part two gives a systematic survey of diseases within the systems that includes epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and treatment modalities. The purpose is to provide an in-depth and current understanding of disease processes across the life span; to link relevant modern biology to a disease state; describe gender differences related to epidemiology and pathophysiology; and to integrate health promotion and disease prevention. Risk factors and nutrition are incorporated. The book is useful for practicing nurses and students in pathophysiology courses. The overall design is very logical. The first section provides a framework for understanding broad concepts such as genetics, cell injury, immunity, and inflammation. The second section examines normal anatomy and physiology, which serve as a basis for understanding common pathophysiology of adults and children. A new feature is "What's New Boxes," which present easy to understand updates in research. This textbook has always been an excellent resource and this new edition adds full color illustrations. There are algorithms that summarize important physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms. Students often indicate that these provide a quick means for review. Full-color photographs of clinical manifestations, specimens, and clinical imaging techniques add tothe text. Case studies are strategically included for each chapter dealing with disease states. New sections on headaches, neurobiology of selected psychiatric conditions, an integrated chapter on multiple interacting systems, and new illustrations make this text even better than previous editions.
From The Critics
Reviewer: Cherie G. Howk, DNSc, RN, CS-FNP (Indiana State University)
Description: This is the fourth edition of a well researched and written pathophysiology book. There is an emphasis on the underlying processes of disease in both part one, Central Concepts of Pathophysiology: Cells and Tissues, and part two, Pathophysiologic Alterations: Organs and Tissues. The authors have been diligent in adding pertinent content and updating state-of-the-art information in such areas on hematopoiesis and the stem cell system. The organization of the book remains clear and user friendly. The photographs and drawings are exceptional and the algorithms on the approach to the various disease processes informative. As with previous editions, the summary reviews at the end of each chapter are key to enhancing the understanding of this difficult yet important subject.
Purpose: The previous editions of this book explicitly stated that their purpose was to provide basic and easy to comprehend information about pathophysiologic mechanisms and manifestations of disease. And while that goal was not explicitly stated in this edition, its purpose is to update and provide state-of-the-art information on the subject of pathophysiology. This objective is not only worthy, but necessary considering this accelerated time of discovery. The author did meet the objective.
Audience: The authors are both professors in the College of Nursing at the University of Utah. With their role as nursing educators the book is appropriately targeted at nursing students. In addition, the level of information provided is very appropriate for use by nurse practitioner students in all specialties.
Features: This book provides in-depth coverage of pathophysiology of disease starting at the cellular level. If there id a shortcoming to this book, it would be that there is too much information. This potential shortcoming is countered by the very informative charts, figures and algorithms that make sense of the information. An added index of special features provides an additional method to sort through the volumes of information. Advanced practice nurses will value the attention to clinical manifestations and evaluation and treatment.
Assessment: This is the premier pathophysiology book for both the beginning and advanced practice nurse. The current edition will only make this a more valuable book for the education of future nurses. The attention to features that promote learning in nursing is unique to most pathophysiology texts.
