Overview

Study Guide to Forensic Psychiatry is a question-and-answer companion that allows you to evaluate your mastery of the subject matter as you progress through The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Forensic Psychiatry, Second Edition. The Study Guide is made up of 139 questions divided into 23 individual quizzes of 5-10 questions each that correspond to chapters in the Textbook. Questions are followed by an Answer Guide that references relevant text (including the page number) in the Textbook to allow quick access to needed information. Each answer is accompanied by a discussion that not only addresses the correct response but also explains why other responses are not correct.

The Study Guide's companion, The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Forensic Psychiatry, Second Edition is a versatile resource that is valuable not only for practicing psychiatrists (both the general clinician and the forensic specialist) but also for psychiatric residents, those enrolled in forensic fellowship programs, and other mental health professionals. Organized around case examples and featuring an index of legal cases, the book provides the context clinicians require to navigate the legal system, understand their role as expert witnesses, and practice professionally and ethically.

Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Steven T. Herron, MD (University of Arizona Health Sciences Center)
Description: This study guide contains short, multiple-choice questions and detailed answers relating to the information outlined in the textbook by the same authors.
Purpose: With no introduction from the authors regarding the purpose of this workbook, it seems likely it is meant to solidify the information gleaned by reading the companion text.
Audience: While this guide may be useful for those learning general aspects of forensic psychiatry (residents or medical students), it is primarily geared for those with a greater degree of expertise and understanding of the field of forensic psychiatry and its complex and challenging issues.
Features: Each of the 23 chapters contains five questions on topics ranging from ethics to working with attorneys. These are separated from the answer guide, which makes up the last half of the book. Answers are referenced to specific pages in the companion text, and can be quite comprehensive in their depth. There are no diagrams or figures, and references are provided at the end of each answer section for the individual chapters.
Assessment: While I found textbook to be quite useful, this guide seems incomplete and arbitrary. Given the complexity of the issues under discussion, limiting each chapter to only five questions tends to leave out large portions of information vital for understanding the nature of the topics and could cause readers to be overconfident about their knowledge in these areas. After recently taking the forensic psychiatry subspecialty examination for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, I was hoping this guide would be a welcome addition to use in preparation. Unfortunately, I was disappointed, as there are too few texts available for this type of review. This guide's main audience might be those who need to assess their knowledge level prior to preparation for the subspecialty examination.
