Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Daniel Loiterstein, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: As a companion to test knowledge and evaluate comprehension, American Psychiatric Publishing produced this study guide to complement the 3rd edition of the Textbook of Geriatric Psychiatry.
Purpose: The authors intend this to be a companion used along with the textbook. Each chapter of the study guide corresponds to chapters in the textbook. The growing field of geriatric psychiatry has very few similar resources. This book fills a worthy need as a educational tool.
Audience: The challenging questions match the level expected of a board certified geriatric psychiatrist. Although the authors do not explicitly mention this goal, completing the questions would be good preparation for the board certification examination.
Features: A total of 211 questions are divided among 32 chapters. Each chapter contains between 5 and 10 questions. Answers, along with explanations and page numbers corresponding to relevant passages in the textbook, follow the questions. Most of the questions are appropriately challenging for the target audience.
Assessment: This study guide is a useful accompaniment to the textbook. Completion of the questions would be adequate preparation for the board examination for geriatric psychiatry.
