From The CriticsReviewer: Steven T. Herron, MD (University of Arizona Health Sciences Center)
Description: This study guide consists of between four and eight relatively brief summary questions that coincide with each chapter of the companion book, The American Psychiatric Press Textbook of Psychopharmacology, 4th edition (American Psychiatric Publishing, 2009).
Purpose: The editors state its purpose is to provide individuals who have purchased the textbook "an opportunity to evaluate their understanding of the material contained in the textbook."
Audience: The primary audience, therefore, are individuals who have purchased or are using the textbook. However, those studying for certification or recertification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology also may find this guide useful for highlighting strengths and weaknesses in their own knowledge base.
Features: Though structured like many other study guides, this book has a few notable distinctions. First, though few in number, the questions for each chapter are challenging and an accurate representation of the types of questions one might expect on the actual board examination. Second, correct answers are presented in a separate section of the book, and while this is not revolutionary, the degree of explanation is significant and includes diagrams, charts, and tables to illustrate pertinent points. Third, incorrect answers are addressed so readers can more clearly appreciate why the remaining answers are not correct. Finally, many answers also contain current references for added clarification if required, and each answer lists a specific page in the textbook.
Assessment: The questions should be challenging for anyone, and the explanations are particularly useful for the audience likely to be using the study guide. It will undoubtedly benefit anyone wishing to assess their knowledge of psychopharmacology, and should serve as a useful resource for potential board examinees as they prepare for this comprehensive and challenging test.
