In this future-set novella by bestselling author Scott Westerfeld, Kieran Black lives in a "perfect" world. Disease and starvation have been eradicated, sleep is unnecessary, and it takes no time at all to go from the Bahamas to the moon. But now Kieran has to take Scarcity, a class about how people lived in the bad old days. And as if sitting through an hour of Scarcity every day wasn't depressing enough, it's final projects time. Each student must choose some form of ancient hardship to experience for two whole weeks. Kieran chooses having to sleep eight hours a night, which doesn't seem too annoying.
Maria Borsotti has never thought much of Kieran, but she decides to take pity on him and help him out with his project. Soon, Kieran is sleeping and having vivid dreams, while Maria, whose Scarcity project is to give up all teenage hormone regulation, is experiencing emotions she never knew she had. As their assignments draw them closer together, they begin to wonder if the olden days weren't so bad. Maybe something has been missing from their perfect lives after all?

This is a pretty short e-book, but it is classic Scott Westerfeld. He writes like no other can. Thought short, it is still filled with the Westerfeld's original and creative ideas for the future world. It was a very enjoyable read!

Just a little story on how teens react to the opposite sex in a futuristic setting. Even though it is sometimes suggestive it is an overall good story for teens and adults alike.

He stomps in and sets up targets with dominos face on it and chops each one down with ease, and they were full concrete. Oh how I love my sword, and hate domino

I got the sample and i don't like the writing style. It felt like i was reading something a 5th grader wrote. It could use ALOT of improvement. But, i could overlook the bad writing for the sake of a good plot and good story/character development. So could anyone tell me some good points about the story? Are the characters deep or just underdeveloped? Does the story answer questions or leave you with no answers? Does the plot come together or is it just confusing? I would really like to know, because this is a series (right?) and whats the point if its awful? So thank you ^_^~Natalia <3

Even though it was really short, the read was not so bad. It made me think of the Uglies series which was awesome. I wish that it was longer because it would have made a great series. Who knows maybe it will or not. I think it was and interesting read.
