Sublime's eponymous major-label debut arrived a few months after the band's leader, Brad Nowell, died tragically of a heroin overdose. As a show of sympathy, the album tended to be slightly overrated in some critical quarters, who claimed that Nowell was an exceptionally gifted lyricist and musical hybridist, but Sublime doesn't quite support those claims. Even so, the trio does have a surprising grace in its unabashedly traditionalist fusion of Californian hardcore punk, light hip-hop, and reggae. Switching between bracing hardcore and slow, sexy reggae numbers, Sublime display supple, muscular versatility and, on occasion, a gift for ingratiatingly catchy hooks, as on the hit single "What I Got." What they don't have is the vision -- either lyrical or musical -- to maintain interest throughout the course of the entire album. Sublime sags when the band delves too deeply into their dub aspirations or when their lyrics slide into smirking humor. The low moments don't arrive that often -- by and large, the album is quite engaging -- but they happen frequently enough to make the record a demonstration of the band's blossoming ability, but not the fulfillment of their full potential. Of course, Nowell's death gives the record a certain pathos, but that doesn't make the album any stronger.

The best music ever written, what do you expect?

I'm not just saying this because my friends and I are the biggest Sublime fans ever, but because I am a fan of great music, whether it be punk, rock, reggae or ska, but Sublime is the best band in this world! You could buy any cd in this genre, but the fact is that no other band can even compare to Sublime's ultimate songwriting, and this style of music which they perfected. When you hear Bradley Nowell perform, you can tell he puts all of his soul into the music, using his great voice and his beloved guitar to express himself. Eric Wilson is such an accomplished musician, you can tell in many of his solo-like basslines and his bone chilling dub basslines that will keep your head bobbin' long after the cd is finished. And Bud Gaugh is the best reggae and punk drummer you will find out there, he is one of the three key elements that make up this truly goundbraking band. Allthough this is Sublime's most popular, and probably the best produced album, besides, "Second hand smoke", many of their best songs are written on all of their other albums also, in fact I don't think they have an album out that I can't listen through without skipping through some songs, you can just pop in the cd's and listen to them the whole way through! I definately suggest you get as many bootlegs as you can find from the internet, or wherever, to get the full Sublime experience. Not enough can ever be said of just how great this band was!

    Sublime...

Yeah, Sublime... Sublime the band, Sublime the album. I love this album, they're my friend's favorite band, and now they're growing to be mine. This has to be my favorite album, with 40 Oz. to Freedom as a close second. My favorite tracks on this album: Santeria, What I got, Doin' Time Poor Brad. "Got to find a reason why my money's all gone"

    A Needed Investment

The self-titled cd "Sublime" is the best of all Sublime's work. It's great that the last of Brad Noell's work, before his death, was his best. You can actually listen to the whole cd instead of just picking one ore two songs, because every song on it is great. The mix of reggae, ska, and punk helps to make the cd fresh and not sound the same the whole way through. Every song sounds different and original. It's a cd that is very easy to get into and even if you aren't a huge Sublime fan you will at least find a couple songs you enjoy. As a big fan, I love every track on the album. This cd would be a great investment if you don't already have it.

Your cd collection is not complete w/out this one

This is one of the best sublime cds recorded, especially since this is the last one recorded before the death of Brad Nowell. Every track on this cd is a hit. If you like Bob Marley, Long Beach Dub All Stars, or any other ska, reggae,or dubstyle band, then you'll love sublime. Buy the cd.

An incredible album that will have to become a classic! It brings some good listening into the music scene other than the pop-Britney Spears bull$#*^ that is around! Sublime are just keeping it real and this album is awesome to listen to whenever, wherever. Beautiful playing, genious lyrics, 5 stars!

    Dope Music

This album is a classic. The songs are still currently being played on radio stations everywhere. Sublime is full of fresh ska sounds mixed with the carefree mentality of reggae. The songs are mainly focused on the lifestyle of the band members. Sometimes the lyrics can get a little bit on the risky side, but soon you will find yourself humming the tunes. I liked how the tunes just stick in your head and the words are just as entrancing. Sublime just puts you into a happy mood and lets you forget your current problems. Since the sounds of this album are not too loud yet mind captivating you can listen to this album for both your background and main listening. It¿s very rare to find an album that is just as refreshing and vibrant as this is. It is one of the most versatile albums that I have ever heard. I absolutely love this album.

    Sing Along With Sublime

Sublime is an awesome band that i have been smiling to while listening to for about 5 years. This is their 2nd best album (in my opinion). Every song is like a sing-along while in my car. A MUST BUY.

    Skabiddyboy@cs.com's Review.

Sublime spares you from all the bull thats on the music scene right now. If your not a Brittny Spears fan And you feel Rage against the machine is too hard for your liking....This is the CD for you. Bradley Nowell is a lyrical Guiness and it shows in this album. From punk to ska to regge to hardcore, this versitile band stops at nothing to bring you the best music this side of sane.
