Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
From the high-interest series, "Machines on the Move," read about submarines. Each chapter is two pages with captioned snapshots. Learn the names of the basic submarine parts (i.e. sail, hull, and rudder) and their purpose by examining the labeled diagram. There are many color photographs such as the one-man submarines and remote-controlled subs. There are insets that briefly describe what life is like for the crew that live onboard a nuclear submarine. Another inset is about a pedal-powered, wooden submarine from the year 1775. Some readers may need support with the informational text features such as the format of each chapter and its headings, bold print, insets, and labels. A glossary and index are at the back of the book along with a list of three web sites to explore for further information about submarines. The books in this series have a similar format. No specialty consultant is listed. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
