Engrossing old Sci. Fi., from one of the greatest

This excerpt is nearly identical to the text of "Subspace Explorers", part 1 of Doc Smith's "last great space adventure".
(There are 2 parts to this series; my copy shows a first copyright date of 1965.)
This is the author of the wonderful Lensman and Skylark series.

I have reread this book, and enjoyed it, even though not quite as much as those other 2 series. It is a little hard to believe in a few parts (I am a trained engineer), but thoroughly entertaining.
Smith earned a PhD in science -- I forget which, at the moment -- and his writing was Always well-informed, and entertaining.
