This seventh volume in the Advances in Adolescent Development series provides an overview of the current knowledge about alcohol, tobacco, and drug abuse in adolescents and young adults. The intent is to provide researchers, graduate students, and practitioners with a comprehensive overview of the field of substance abuse as it currently exists. The word ""misuse"" is used in the title, rather than ""abuse,"" to indicate a richer context in which to understand the maladaptive use of drugs in adolescents. The material is sufficiently general to make it appealing to a broad spectrum of students and professionals interested in the adolescent experience and the problems associated with this age group. It lacks, however, the depth necessary to be a valuable resource for researchers and others working in the field of substance abuse. There are few graphs and tables but a respectable list of current references at the conclusion of each chapter. The volume editors and contributing authors include an impressive list of scholars, journal editors, researchers, and professionals in the fields of alcohol and drug addiction, program evaluation, and adolescent development. This is a good introduction to the topic of substance abuse in adolescents. The chapters on prevention also provide an excellent discussion on program evaluation and assessment, an area less familiar to many readers. The work, however, falls short of stated goals of providing a comprehensive and integrated treatment of the subject. It lacks a theoretical perspective in which to understand the phenomenon in this age group, and it does not make a serious attempt to relate substance abuse to the overall process of adolescentdevelopment.
