Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joella Peterson
In this book in the "Math Fun with Sebastian Pig and Friends!" series, Sebastian Pig, Patty Porcupine, and Milo Elephant learn about subtraction while camping. Sebastian, Patty, and Milo have their camping trip all planned; however, whenever they want to eat, do an activity, or sleep, they discover that some of their camping supplies are missing (due to some mischievous mice that take the supplies for their own amusement). After reading the math story problems, readers can look at "Sebastian's notebook" to see the math written in the familiar numerical format. "Sebastian's notebook" also has other "fact family" problems written out. For example in one story problem it was 5-2=3. So the "fact family" also had listed 2+3=5 and 3+2=5. At the end of the story, the mice feel sorry for taking so many things, so they apologize, and all is forgiven. The book also contains a small list of "Words to Know," an index, and lists of books and websites for more information. The highlight of the extra features is the list of subtraction families, which includes a list of what 1 to 12 minus zero would equal, all the way up to the number 10. This book is a good introduction for kids learning basic subtraction story problems. Reviewer: Joella Peterson

These charming books approach their subjects with good humor. For example, in Subtraction , Sebastian and his friends are on a camping trip where various items are being pilfered by some mischievous mice. While the bewildered campers use subtraction to figure out how many of their belongings are missing, the inventive rodents use the purloined hot dogs as water skis and the paddles from the friends' boat as a diving board. These titles will have children laughing as they learn the concepts that are clearly demonstrated in the story line. Each one includes a practice section. With their sunny watercolors and engaging characters, these books will be welcome additions.
