The Success Of... series celebrates professional achievements in minority communities, with the hope of inspiring young readers and offering them such role models as Caroline Jones, the first African American woman to make it to the top of the rough-and-tumble advertising industry. Along with The Success of Caroline Jones Advertising, Inc.: An Advertising Success Story by Robert Fleming, with black-and-white photographs by Michael Harris, titles in the series include The Success of Hispanic Magazine: A Publishing Success Story by John Garcia, with black-and-white photographs by Ricardo Vargas, and The Success of the Navajo Arts and Crafts Enterprise: A Retail Success Story by LeNora Begay Trahant, with black-and-white photographs by Monty Roessel.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 6-10Two inspiring success stories. Fleming traces Jones's rise to the top of the advertising industry and the creation of her own agency. He briefly covers his subject's early years, education, and fledgling career. Suggestions for young people who are interested in the field are included and explanations of how ads are put together for print media, TV, and radio are provided. Numerous black-and-white photos of Jones and her staff appear throughout. While the text is informative and readable, the author's often breathless style makes it almost like reading an ad. Still, considering the obstacles Jones faced in a white male-dominated profession, her achievements are indeed impressive. Garca focuses on the founding and operation of Hispanic magazine, from writing to marketing. He presents vignettes about various people involved in its editing, advertising, production, and circulation, and explains their duties. The writing is clear and filled with detail. The book is illustrated with shots from the magazine and photos of staff at work. A good look not only at the publishing business, but also at a publication that endeavors to fill a need in a specific community.Christine A. Moesch, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, NY
