From The CriticsReviewer: Willem J de Villiers, MD, PhD, MHCM (University of Kentucky College of Medicine)
Description: Leading global authorities contribute the chapters in this attractive and useful training manual for general and advanced gastrointestinal endoscopy. There are numerous illustrations and images for viewing, but unfortunately they cannot be downloaded into presentations. An accompanying CD-ROM contains over 130 videos demonstrating various diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic techniques.
Purpose: The aim is to provide a comprehensive training and "how I do it" guide to gastrointestinal endoscopy. Further aims are to facilitate acquisition of new skills and to act as a resource for academic and community endoscopists. This is a visually pleasing book that provides a great deal of practical information for both inexperienced and more seasoned endoscopists.
Audience: "The authors, from all corners of the globe, are experts in their respective fields. They have either personally contributed to their various topics, have acknowledged clinical prowess, or have published extensively. The book is aimed at GI endoscopists in training and practicing GI clinicians. The World Endoscopy Organization endorses this effort as it adds to its mission of enhanced endoscopy training. "
Features: The four main sections cover basic principles and practice, training in the major endoscopic procedures, training in specific techniques, and challenges for the future. The chapters are authoritative, are generally easily absorbed, and are accompanied by videos that better illustrate techniques than some more laborious descriptions. There are numerous aesthetically pleasing diagrams, algorithms, tables, endoscopic photographs, EUS images, radiographs, and histology pictures. The accompanying CD-ROM contains useful video clips. I particularly appreciated the chapter on deep enteroscopy.
Assessment: This is a very useful addition to the GI endoscopy training literature. The authors have channeled their many decades of collective expert endoscopic experience into a book that clearly represents their prowess as teachers. I would rank this as essential for the bookshelf of GI endoscopists (especially trainees).
