SUCH, SUCH WERE THE JOYS takes its titles from the long autobiographical account--nearly one third of the book--of Orwell's early schooling at a place he calls Crossgates, in which he draws a memorable portrait of the English public school. Overview

SUCH, SUCH WERE THE JOYS takes its titles from the long autobiographical account--nearly one third of the book--of Orwell's early schooling at a place he calls Crossgates, in which he draws a memorable portrait of the English public school. Despite all the pressures to conform, Orwell remained an individual. Until his dying day he was idiocyncratic.

The ten pieces brought together here range from "Anti-Semitism in Britain" to his analysis of the motivations of writers in "Why I Write." "Inside the Whale" is an appraisal of Henry Miller. "Looking Back on the Spanish War" is written from Orwell's perspective as a Loyalist volunteer.
