Editorial Reviews

VOYA
In this light-hearted romance, sixteen-year-old Mina struggles with the unusual choice of whether she should "turn" and become a vampire like her parents. Mina's parents are pretty normal and boring, so she has never really given the whole vampire world much thought. Mina's happy complacency abruptly ends when her existence is discovered by the Vampire Council. She realizes that her parents have been hiding her from the Council because it is against the rules for vampires to live with human relatives. Now that the Council is aware of Mina, she is forced to go to weekly vampire classes so that she can make an informed decision by her seventeenth birthday. Although having vampire parents may suck, Mina is having unusually good luck in her love life. Surprisingly Mina meets two promising boys in vampire school, and finally starts a friendship with popular Nathan, on whom she has had a crush for as long as she can remember. Luckily Mina has her best friend, Serena, to help her deal, although she cannot tell Serena the truth about her vampire problem. Mina is an appealing character with a humorous voice, and this story focuses on friendship and romance rather than vampires. The most unbelievable element is not the existence of vampires but how wonderful and kind Mina's family and friends are. This breezy book will be more satisfying to chick-lit fans looking for a quick, fun read than to teens looking for a rich and atmospheric vampire story. Reviewer: Amy Luedtke
Kirkus Reviews
Another toothless vampire novel. Mina's vampire parents (they turned right after her birth) have been busted by the Northwest Regional Vampire Council. Now 16-year-old Mina must attend teen vampire classes and decide (immediately) if she, too, wants to "turn." Plot flaws like why the Council would want permanently adolescent vampires, who would presumably be harder to place via the VRA (Vampire Relocation Agency), are par for the course in this fluffy, "fact"-filled read (sunlight doesn't kill; vampires never sleep). There are three guys to deal with-handsome would-be vampire Aubrey, sweet George, also considering turning, and longtime crush Nathan, whom readers will soon realize crushes Mina's BFF, Serena-and prom to prepare for. Mina's inconsistencies grate (she's a girly-girl with no fashion sense; she's smart enough to get upset at the sexism in Dracula but too dumb to see the obvious even as she narrates it) and the ending is telegraphed a mile away. Still, vampire stories always have readers, and this is pure wish fulfillment-a vampire romance with no biting. (Fantasy. 12-16)

Let there be more Sucks to be Me!!!

I received Sucks to be Me as a Christmas gift and I am very glad that I got it. This book is absolutely hilarious and VERY well written. All the characters are very real and I saw a lot of myself in Mina. This book is so good; it¿s a no-brainer for a screenwriter. Many people may want to compare Sucks to be Me to Twilight but there is no comparison. Twilight is a poorly written string of words that wants to be called a book and Sucks to be Me is the best book I have read all year! Kimberly Pauley is an amazing author, first time or otherwise. I pray for more of these books.

    Sucks To Be Me

When I first heard about this book I thought it was just another book feeding off the popularity of Stephanie Meyer¿s Twilight Saga, but when I actually sat down and read it I liked it a lot. Kimberly Pauly has created a different perspective on the vampire world. This story stars a sixteen year old human girl whose parents and uncle are all vampires. When the Vampire Council becomes aware of her existence she is forced too take classes once a week to help her make an informed decision on whether to turn into a vampire or not. The story is centered more on friendship and family than on vampires and non-vampires. Sucks To Be Me helps you see how friendship and family are intertwined with the major decisions a person makes in their life. I would recommend this book to any girl who wants a quick, fun read. Kimberly Pauly leaves you hoping for a sequel.

    A Really Great Read.

I thought overall, this was a pretty good book. You can really get into this book, because Mina is really relatable. At points, the story wasn't super exciting our moved to quickly, but it gave you time to really get what was going on. I give it 4 stars and I would totally tell my friends about it.

ONE OF THE BEST VAMPIRE BOOKS EVER

I think this book is good and it is sooo ahmazing ! I didnt read twilight or anything by Stephanie Meyer because I thought vampire romance was really dumb and I thought I would never buy a book with vampires in it. I actually tried to read a book by Stephanie Meyer but let me tell you it was the dumb. I was confused and to me it was just upsetting.

THEN When I noticed this book I thought okay another vampire book NEVER EVER GONNA HAPPEN!!! until I read the cover and the back and its ounded real good so I bought it and i couldnt stop reading it SINCE!!!

Its a bout a 16 year old girl who have two vampires for parents and she has to choose whether or not to become one herself.

Okay I'm editing this since I finished the book. It was the most amazing book ever. I hope Kimberly Pauley writes another one!!! This book was very well written and funny!

    Sucks To Be Me

I don't really read books, but after reading twilight i liked reading books about vampires. I saw Sucks To Be Me in Barnes and Noble, and my eyes just stared at it for a while and i said to myself "i need to buy that book".

Sucks To Be Me is about Mina Hamilton who is a regular high school student that doesn't know what is about to happen to her in the future.. Her parents are vampires, and if you're asking how they became one, here's the answer: Her uncle Mortie got bitten by a girl named Madeleine while doing his job. Then Mortie bit Mina's dad when he found Mortie. After giving birth to Mina, her mom decided to be a vampire with her husband. And that's what happened.

Now, Mina has to choose. Be a vampire for the rest of her life, or be human and be abandoned by her parents. She attends a vampire information session with people who are willing to be vampires. She was required to do this, ordered by the Northwest Regional Vampire Council.

This book is a really modern vampire book. Hot guys, prom, and friendship... all is included. A book that is surely recommended. :D Be prepared, once you start reading, u won't be able to stop.

    Sucks to Not Read

i think that this is a good book. it is an interesting read, because not many people take vampirism to this level: combining it with our society. it was perfect for my book report: the first thing i picked up off of the shelf. i recommend this book for people who like to go back to their teenage years and explore their imagination. thumbs up.

    Really, really like this book

This is the first book I've read by this author and really enjoyed her style of writing. The story keeps moving, not pausing in spots like other authors trying to figure out what to write next.
All her characters were believeable , interesting and personalities well developed. Looking forward to buying her second book in this series and hope she continues to write.

    This was a TERRIBLE book.

This was one of the worst books I have ever read, right behind Twilight. The author did not keep me interested and the plot was not one that interests me either. Do NOT read this book if you value your I.Q.

    Hmmm...

I liked the writting style of this book. The whole journal entry thing was pretty cool. As for the story... it was ok, some mild humor, conflict and an understandable plot. It wont kill you to read this book. Its pretty average, but then again you might like it more than I did.(:

    more then i expected

when i first stared reading it, it was much of an interesting story but later it became interesting, though the thing about Mina not realizing that George actually liked her i mean anyone could have seen her, though they do say love makes you blind. the ending was good, it could have been better, like maybe get into her vampire life a little more.

A Funny Quick Read, with that Awesome Twist of Vampires

I was very impressed with this book. When I bought it, I had my doubts, but quickly changed my mind when it made fun of Twilight the very first page (Don't get my wrong, I LOVE the Twilight Saga, but sometimes its funny to see other authors acknowlage it). The author's veiw of vampires is a refreshing new take on the usual scary or sexy ;) species. It's romantic, hilarious, memorable quick read. I highly recommend it.

I am only on the 10th chapter, and already I can't put it down. After reading the Twilight series, i thought no vampire book could be as good. Then I picked up "Sucks o Be Me" and it has so much reality and humor that on my first day of reading i have already referred this book to some very picky readers!!!!

Sucks To Be Me is far from sucky, In Fact it is an Amazing Novel!!!!

I saw this book at Barnes and Noble and thought it was just another typical vampire novel so it took me a while to decide to read it. When I did, I was taken by surprise. With a creative plot, great characters, and and interesting new vampire concept, this novel is far from the typical vampire novel.

The book is about a teenage girl named Mina. Her parents are vampires and she is forced to decide if she wants to become on too. To help her make the decision she is forced to go to vampire lessons twice a week with other prospective vampires.

I really connected quickly with Mina. Her attitude was fun and although the book does deal with vampires I was able to relate to most of the things she was going through. Mina's best friend Serena was also a great character. And so was George, a friend of Mina's.

Once I started reading the book, I could not put it down. I really enjoy books that keep me on my toes and this one did for sure. I could not figure out what Mina's decision would be until she made it. The book has everything: fun, romance, suspense. Plus, it is really well written. It really is just a great book all around. Everyone should read this book!

So not average, with a different twist

I highly recommend this book for readers. It's not the average teenage book of fall in love with a vampire. It has a different twist. In addition, this book is hilarious. I can't wait for the next book.

Mina Hamilton is not the average teenager. Especially since her parents are vampires. But ever since the Vampire Coucil found out that her parents have been hiding her, she has a big decision to make. To become a vampire or not. But there are other complications. Serena, Mina's best friend, has no clue who her parents really are. Also, Mina meets two cute guys at the weekly vampire courses that she is forced to take. And on top of that, Mina finally started a friendship with her long-time crush, Nathan. While other teenagers would say yes, Mina has a tough decision. How is a teenager suppose to choose?
