The Sudbury School Murders
by Ashley Gardner

Captain Lacey takes a post as a secretary at the Sudbury School in Berkshire, a school for sons of the wealthiest merchants and bankers in England. Lacey discovers as soon as he arrives that he's been hired for more than his letter-writing skills--a series of disturbing pranks have kept the school in an uproar, and the headmaster expects Lacey to discover the identity of the prankster. The problems intensify when a groom of the school's stables turns up dead in a lock of the nearby canal. A Romany is arrested for the murder, and Lacey is the only person who believes him innocent. As Lacey works to discover what happened, he gets drawn into the secrets of Marianne Simmons, the actress who'd lived upstairs from Lacey in London. Meanwhile the intrigue surrounding the murder becomes as murky as the waters of the canal itself and puts Lacey and Grenville into deadly danger.

The Sudbury School Murders won the RTBookReviews Reviewers Choice Award for Best Historical Mystery of 2005.

Book 4 in the Captain Lacey Regency mysteries. This is a full-length novel.

Editorial Reviews

RT Bookreviews - Sheri Melnick
The mystery of the groom's murder is as intriguing as Gardner's bird's-eye view of the prejudicial 19th-century English justice system. This page-turning historical is thoroughly enjoyable.
Romance Readers Connection - Deborah Hern
The pace of the story is expertly set, moving along briskly and keeping the reader compulsively turning the pages. English country mysteries don’t get much better than this.
Fresh Fiction - Suan Wilson
The fourth Gabriel Lacey mystery is another compelling entry in this outstanding series.
Rakehell Reviews - Leanne Davis
If you've enjoyed the previous three books, you won't want to miss this one.

    Excellent but wordy

I thought the story was really good but it seemed a little wordy to me. It goes into too much detail and not enough at other times.

Nobody writes  a hero with honor and integrity better then Ashley Gardner.   Yet she makes him human and vulnerable .   Good cast of supporting characters also.   Though I'm getting a little tired of the Louisa chick.   But the best part is unwinding the mystery.  I'm on theFourth one and they have all been great..

I am in the midst of reading this series and I'm glad to say it leaves off from one book to the other. It is just good reading, nothing fantastic, but good.

    Very Good!! As always.

I could not get enough of this series and am excited about the newest book coming out soon. This one took place, a little differently, out of London for the most part and with some really interesting characters. This book brought some things together and solved some on going mysteries about Lacey and his friends.

Another enjoyable read by this talented author. I prefered some of the earlier books in the series but I really like the characters that ashley has created. Please keep writing about them. Your books are classics and I will be re reading them over the years.
