Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A young boy decides he should go and buy some new socks, seeing how he has been wearing the same pair for three months. However, rather than going straight to the store, he takes the "scenic route, through the swamp." Obviously, the boy soon encounters an alligator that cares more about a snack than the plethora of adverbial descriptions. However, thanks to the delayed purchase of socks, the stench overcomes the alligator, and the boy is free to continue on his journey while adverbially reflecting on the incident. This is a delightful tale with humor and adverbs scattered on every page. In fact, there are 25 different adverbs used, and they all are presented in a green text to set them apart. This is a perfect read for school kids learning what adverbs are and how to use them. In fact, this book teaches kids while they are too busy being entertained to even notice that they are learning. This is a great book and a wonderful read. 2004, Gibbs Smith, Ages 8 to 12.

Gr 1-4-Once again, Walton presents a story that includes a language lesson. After having worn his socks for three months, a round-headed boy with small ears decides it is time to purchase a new pair. He takes the scenic route to town through the swamp, where he retrieves some lost items and trips over a large-jawed alligator that chases and catches him. When one of the youngster's shoes comes off, the overpowering stench of his sock causes the animal to pass out and the child escapes. The text is replete with adverbs ("steadily," "angrily," "swiftly," etc.), making clear the concept that these descriptive words end in "ly." Bradshaw's zany, exaggerated cartoons are humorous and dynamic. The characters' heads are large and their bodies ridiculously small. The artist makes effective use of perspective and close-ups to show intense emotion and activity. This would be a useful read-aloud when introducing a unit on the parts of speech.-Linda Staskus, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Parma, OH Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
