Sugar Busters!: Cut Sugar to Trim Fat
  • Lose weight
  • Lower your cholesterol
  • Achieve optimal wellness
  • Increase your energy
  • Help treat diabetes and other diseases

Featuring easy recipes from New Orleans top restaurants -- and a 14-day meal plan!

It's time to face facts. Low fat diets don't work. Thousands of Americans on low-fat, high-carbohydrate regimes gain back their weight in record numbers, often wreaking unhealthy havoc on their bodies. Why? Because the culprit isn't too much fat, it's too much sugar -- and low-fat food is full of it. The truth is sugar causes the production of insulin which, in large amounts, keeps your weight from dropping off, no matter how strictly you diet or how often you exercise. Just look at the ingredients of your favorite foods: sugar is everywhere. So how can you possibly avoid it? The answer: Sugar Busters! Developed by three renowned physicians and a CEO of a Fortune 500 company, Sugar Busters! is a revolutionary new diet plan based on sound nutritional principles that shows you how to eliminate sugar from your daily menu through easy-to-follow recipes and meal plans. This effective and groundbreaking program steers you away from overhyped (and insulin-producing) starches such as potatoes and pasta, white bread and white rice, carrots and corn -- and leads you toward sensible consumption of delicious foods once considered taboo. With Sugar Busters! you will

  • Develop a diet plan that is right for you
  • Determine the glycemic levels of various foods with a handy glycemic index
  • Discover which foods to eat at what time of day
  • Avoid food combinations that add pounds
  • Learn the myths of calories, fats, cholesterol, and weight gain
  • Feel great, increase your energy, and prevent chronic disease

Simple, practical, and easy to adapt to your busy lifestyle -- including savory gourmet meal plans designed by 12 of New Orleans' famous restaurants like Antoine's, Galatoire's, Commander's Palace, and Brennan's -- Sugar Busters! is the diet of the future, an amazing, new approach to eating, nutrition, and health.

Throw away your fat-gram counters. Forget those outdated calorie concepts. Feast on a delicious, diet-healthy table of red meat, lamb chops, salads with Roquefort dressing, even red wine -- and still lose weight. Remember:

  • Cutting calories in the diet only leads to temporary weight loss.
  • Fats are vitally important to your body's metabolic process.
  • Large meals should never be eaten before going to bed -- because cholesterol is also manufactured at night.
  • Fruits should not be eaten in combination with carbohydrates and fats.
  • A glass of wine has less sugar than an ear of corn.
  • Baked potatoes quickly convert to sugar in your stomach.

Read an Excerpt

We are going to propose a way of eating that will allow you to eat most foods in normal quantities, possibly even in larger quantities than you presently consume. You can have three full meals a day and even appropriate snacks. There will not be many things you cannot eat, but there will be certain combinations you should definitely avoid. What you need to avoid most will be foods or combinations of foods that require the secretion of large amounts of insulin to regulate your blood sugar. By simply doing this, you can get slimmer and healthier simultaneously....

Let's get to the point: Sugar is toxic! Sugar? Some sugar? Most sugar? All sugar? Toxic? Well, we will say that refined sugar in any significant quantity is toxic to many human bodies, and it certainly helps make many bodies fat. Moreover, significant quantities of sugar are derived in our digestive system from carbohydrates and starches. Certain of these foods cause a definite strain on the health of the body, probably the mind, and certainly the waistline. Fructose, sugar in fruit, will not normally hurt you, but eaten at the wrong time or in the wrong combinations can create both digestive and metabolic problems. Therefore, what we are recommending is a low-sugar diet. Surprisingly, that cannot be achieved simply by putting away your sugar canister.

How can sugar, something that tastes so good and has been fed so readily to most of us since childhood by our most trusted person on earth, our own mother, possibly be bad for us? Aside from a few bad direct effects, such as dissolving our teeth, sugar largely acts as a stimulus in causing our pancreas gland to secrete one of our body's most powerful hormones, insulin!
Insulin has some good effects on our bodies, such as regulating our blood sugar level, but the bad effects caused by the overproduction of this megahormone are certainly impressive and will be described at length later. Succinctly, insulin causes our bodies to store excess sugar as fat. Insulin further prohibits the mobilization of previously stored fat, even if one is on a rather skimpy, but glucose-generating, diet. And, most significantly, insulin signals our livers to make another big "C" word, cholesterol.

With the SUGAR BUSTERS! meal plan, you get four-star recipes from New Orleans's top restaurants for the most succulent foods imaginable...

  • Beef Tenderloins with Marchand de Vin Sauce
  • Shrimp Ravigote
  • Confit of Duck
  • Venison Tenderloin in Beer Glaze
  • Lamb Loin Provencale
  • Pan-Roasted Filet Mignon Stuffed with Maytag Blue Cheese
  • Warm Haricot Vert and Bacon Salad
  • Shrimp, Crab, and Okra Gumbo
  • Crab-and-Shrimp Stuffed Eggplant
  • ...even Hamburgers!

The only "diet" that's ever worked...

I went to the doctor in August. He made it plain that I either had to lose weight ( I had hit an all time high of 349) or face the possibility of a heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and a host of other maladies. He had recommended the standard, calorie counting type of diets in the past and I always failed to lose weight or keep it off. I had even tried Jenny Craig, but as soon as I went off their packaged foods (which were a real pain), I gained it all back and more. Truly a disappointment. So, he recommended Sugar Busters! to me. I went out and got the book and immediately began to follow the simple recommendations the authors put forth. Cutting out the majority of the carbs I was taking in on a regular basis was hard, but let me tell you, it was worth it. In the intervening 8 weeks since I last saw my doctor, I've dropped 51 pounds (yes, you read that right!). I didn't make any real change in the exercise habits I didn't have, I just began following Sugar Busters!. Now that I'm at a (relatively scrawny) 298, I actually have more energy and feel like going out for some exercise. Sugar Busters! is more about changing your lifestyle than it is about being just another diet. If you've had problems keeping the weight off in the past, this is the plan for you! Many friends at work are now following the Sugar Busters! lifestyle. They saw it working for me, and wanted in on the action. I can't say enough about Sugar Busters!

    Nurses Lose 200 Pounds

Excellent Diet!! I haven't purchased the book yet, but I am on my way to get it now. The reason I want it so much is because of the excellent results I've seen in others. I work at a local hospital and on a trip through the Special Care Nursery one night I noticed that many of my peers had lost a lot of weight. When I inquired how they lost so much weight they replyed that everyone was on the SugarBuster's diet. The night shift nurses had lost a total of 200 lbs. in less than 6 months. I can't wait to start!

    IT WORKS!

If you love sweets, this diet may be hard for you. And if you're a vegetarian, then it may also be next to impossible. But let me tell you . . . it works. And regardless of what many so-called experts and critics think, it is extremely healthy. I include a daily regiment of Centrum, Vitamin C, E, B12, Selenium, and Chromium to make up the difference. The hard part for me was giving up potatoes and pizza. But I love green vegetables, salad, dairy products, and all meats, so it's a fair trade. I'm 6'2' and weighed 193 lbs. when starting the diet. I didn't really need to lose a lot of weight, I just wanted to trim down and eat healthier. I now weigh 181 lbs. two weeks later. If I can lose 12 lbs in two weeks, anyone can. And I only exercise moderately 2 or 3 times a week. It takes will power to avoid refined sugar and starches, but I promise you it will work if you stick with it. When I reach my goal of 179 lbs., I will cut back and allow myself to splurge one night a week and try to stay around 180 lbs. Just set small goals for yourself when starting. If you try it for one week, I guarantee you will lose at least 5 lbs. And after two weeks, you will probably lose 5 or more additional lbs. and will notice the difference in your body. Then soon after that, other people will begin to notice as well!!!! When they ask what your secret is, simply say, 'I don't eat any foods with 1 or more grams of sugar!' That's all it takes!

    Results speak

After months of working-out with no noticeable results, I was frustrated and desperate to reach the goals that I had set for myself. I had even entertained the possibility of taking dangerous and questionable 'vitamins'. I figured I'd give the book a try and see what they had to say. The result: 15 pounds off in two months and I'm losing about a pound or so every week...I have to beleive that it's because I followed the advice given in this book as I have not changed anything else except drastically reducing my sugar intake. The beauty of it is the sheer simplicty. It involves no complicated dieting formulas and very little sacrifice (I've actaully been eating more and better food). The authors do a great job of explaining the connection between sugar and weight gain...nothing overly complicated and best of all it made SENSE. When you consider the bucks that are spent on dieting programs and equipment (30 billion in the US alone)...this book is a steal. I wholeheartedly recommend it to those who really want to make a change in their appearance and health.

    Modify your eating Habits

First, this book is well written and easy to read. It has some simple diet plans you can follow if you don't know where to go next with this and some easy to remember instructions about how to read food packets at the supermarket. Sugar is everywhere. Even where you do not expect it. Cutting sugar from your diet can seem quite daunting at first. It seems all your favorite foods have it. The book explains how you get tired, hungry and irritable because sugar and highly processed carbohydrates raise your blood sugar and you get lots of sugar highs and lows. This also stops you losing weight because you store more fat. So follow the book, look healthier and have more energy.....

Sugar Busters really does work with very little effort on your part. I lost 15 pounds in one month just by following the book, that was with out exercise. Losing that weight made me motivated to start exercising. Sugar Busters gets you started and you have to keep it up if you want to keep the weight off. Reduce Sugar to Stoke the Fat-Burning Fires

In Sugar Busters!, 3 MDs and a former Fortune 500 CEO say: 'Sugar is toxic.' This is the most unusual nutrition/diet book that I have read. Its strength is a reasonably thorough overview of how natural and processed sugars affect your body chemistry. Except for people with diabetes and hypoglycemia, some of this information will be new. I think it is a valuable book for people to read since surveys continue to show that most Americans believe that the way to cut down on their fat is to cut back on fats. As a result, sales of fat-free products are soaring along with waistlines, obesity and weight-related diseases. One of the interesting factoids in the book was that middle-aged men around 50 have only 18 months more of life expectancy now in the United States than they did in 1900. This is true despite all of the advances made in health care that should extend life for those with cardiac disease and cancer. For example, did you know that eating excess sugar causes the body to make more cholesterol. Many people may be able to reduce cholesterol more with sugar reduction than with cholesterol-lowering drugs. Although it would have been nice to have taken a broader look at nutrition in this book (you can get that in Eating Well for Optimum Health), it is my understanding that it is correct that excess quickly-absorbed sugars (whether from Coca-Cola, corn or a candy bar) drive up your blood sugar level, cause your body to create insulin to store the sugar as fat, and suppress the glucagen that causes your body to burn stored fat. There are excellent tables to show how these results vary after a high carbohydrate versus a high protein meal. Carbohydrates are turned by your body into sugar, even if they start out as starches. So you have to beware of baked potatoes (before you add the sour cream and butter) as well as beer. Clearly, our health can stand a lot of improvement. It stands to reason that eating changes should be an important factor. While tens of millions diet, few actually succeed in keeping the weight off. This is one more sign that we are doing something wrong. The authors point out that sugars have been available to the masses for only a few generations. Prior to that, only the richest people suffered from too much sugar, bleached flour, and beer. As the rest of the world becomes wealthier, we face the risk of creating even more harm. I found the lists of what to eat more of and what to eat less of easy to follow and understand. I am not competent to comment on the recipes, fourteen day diet, and restaurant recipes. But if you are interested in such things, they are in the book. Be sure to learn the important lessons about avoiding excess sugar from this book. Then use that a springboard to learn more about what other nutritional changes can help you. I suggest Dean Ornish's book, Eat More, Weigh Less, as another good resource. He takes on the fat side of the intake equation in a thorough and useful way. Live Right for Your Type is another excellent resource that helped me a great deal. After you have learned all about nutrition, go on to Dean Ornish's book, Love and Survival, on how human connections affect our health even more than nutrition does. Overcome as many stalls as possible about how you eat and relate to others to have the fullest, most energetic, happiest, and most healthful life! Success was easy

After struggling with gaining and losing weight over the past 8 years I was more than frustrated. I followed the rules of this diet 100% and the weight came off so quickly I couldn't believe it. I lost my cravings and urge to binge almost immediately. I have continued to eat the Sugar Busters way although I have lost 27 pounds which is all the weight I wanted to lose. In the past if I lost weight I gained it back and gained it back quickly. I am completely confident I will keep the weight off this time. It has only been 4 months but that is 4 months longer than I kept it off before.

Life Saving and worth giving up a few things

This book is a life saver, I have Type II diabetes and I was so afraid. I have been on this diet for a week and feel fabulous. It takes getting use to thinking and eating diffrent but when you go to the store and read ingredients it is no wonder there are so many overweight people and ill people. Some Good Ideas and Some Serious Flaws

This book has some good ideas but its all or nothing attitude leaves the reader with many questions. I believe there should be some room for the 'forbidden foods' and there should be targets for the overall glycemic indexes of meals. Many people, including me, do not wish to remove carrots, corn, and potatoes all of which have some nutritional value beyond their poor glycemic content.

    whataweightogo

Wasn't trying to lose weight, just wanted to lower chlosteral readings for health reasons, but in the process the weitht started coming off.The book was written in a way that was extremely informative, whil not insulting the intelligence of the reader. I have recommended this book to several people, and even considered giving it as a Christmas gift.
