"The mission of the 'Sugar Mommas'...is to bring readers vintage treats and the stories behind them. The result is a book filled with tempting cakes, pies, cookies, and candies. These ladies don't always follow the rules, and it's refreshing to see that their approach to baking comes with a sense of humor." --The Philadelphia Inquirer

"Part retro, part contemporary and charmingly whimsical cookies, pies and bars share space with candies, cakes and more in such favorites as Gran's Tea Cakes, Cracked Sugar Cookies, Kentucky Derby Bars, Chocolate Hydrogen Bombs and Lucinda Bells $100 Pecan Pie....The Sugar Mommas dish out helpful hints throughout the book. Did you know that a 9-by-13-inch pan holds 15 cups, a 9-by-2-inch round cake pan 8 cups?" --San Antonio Express-News

Sugar, Sugar offers 100 of the best cake, pie, cookie, bar, and candy recipes from two sassy Sugar Mommas, Kimberly Reiner and Jenna Sanz-Agero, who are on a mission to preserve America's best sweet treat recipes and the even sweeter stories behind them. As the Sugar Mommas explain, "We drove down memory lane to discover our sugar inheritance, and then dug into everyone else's past to find their dusty, torn, and butter-crusted index cards."

What the Sugar Mommas found was that every recipe has a story. From desserts that accompanied families through good and bad times, to treats perfected by domestic help, to never-before-transcribed sugar concoctions developed from wild imaginations, each recipe conveys the unique personality of the friend or family member who created it.

With plenty of pies worth the lie, cakes to diet for, and better-than-nooky cookies, as well as an assortment of cobblers, crisps, bars, and other decadent confections, Sugar, Sugar is sure to satisfy any sweet tooth.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
It’s safe to say most cookbooks don’t include a Neil Diamond Record, Tiger Beat magazine, the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders, or a Diamond Studded Dog Collar as an ingredient. Not the case for Reiner and Sanz-Agreo’s (also known as the “Sugar Mommas”) collection of desserts, which includes a nostalgic “ingredient” for each of the 68 recipes. The chapters in this inspired title are organized by type of baked good and are whimsically titled including Tart and Pies Worth the Lie; Better than Nooky Cookies, and “Cool Bars and Summer Stars.” Recipes culled from across the country and often named after their creators—Aunt Fern’s Caramel Icing, Annabelle’s Puddin’ Pies, and Gran’s Tea Cakes, give the book a home-spun, one-of-a-kind feel. Classic desserts such as Red Velvet Cake, Apple Pie and Sugar Cookies have their place alongside unique finds such as Scrumdilliumptious White Chocolate Cake and Railroad Track Cookies . In the end, this quirky, innovative collection feels like a professional version of that long-lost family collection of index cards. (Oct.)

    Wonderful recipes and stories!

I think recipes are always best with a story accompanying them and that’s the very idea behind Sugar, Sugar. Authors Kimberly “Momma” Reiner, the founder of Momma Reiner’s Fudge, and Jenna Sanz-Agero, lead singer of “Vixen”, met in law school and together they run the website Sugar Sugar Recipes. These talented ladies have not only gathered classic dessert recipes, but you also get a heartwarming dose of the love behind the treats.

Sugar, Sugar is chock full of interesting tales like dressing up for fancy cookie exchanges, a neighbor who makes tea cakes to eat every day, and a couple’s mutual love of grasshopper pie, all of which add an enticing element to the already delicious sweets. Loving memories of grandmas cooking up their children’s and grandchildren’s favorites to nourish and comfort them are a common theme throughout the book. Sugar, Sugar: Every Recipe Has a Story is sure to get your mouth watering, with scrumptious delights like Lemon Starlets, Italian Love Cake and chocolate Church Windows, which are my favorite way to eat marshmallows! The chapters encompass everyone’s favorite sweet treats: cakes, pies, cookies, candy and readers are encouraged to submit their own treasured recipes along with the back story of why it’s so special to them.
