School Library Journal
YA Just as he does in therapy settings, psychologist Quinnett speaks plainly and directly to his readers, whom he assumes are suicidal. Drawing on his clinical experiences, he acknowledges peoples' reasons for taking their own lives, but counters with arguments for living, anecdotes about other depressed patients, and pointed questions designed to help his audience choose life, at least for the moment. Moreover, he does not mince words about the chilling effects of drugs and alcohol, the brain damage that can result if suicide attempts fail, and the devastation felt by families and friends of successful suicides. A chapter on mental health workers and getting counseling is included. Alice Conlon, University of Houston
