Overview

Korporal Wilhelm Schneider planned desertion on a fall day in the year of 1861 as he ended his twenty-third day in jail, subsisting on bread and water in a cold, dank and windowless cell on an army post outside Stuttgart, Germany.
Join Welhelm, his handsome, irresponsible younger brother Paul and fellow deserter Sgt. Edmund Muller in their perilous flight through France to England and America.

A misunderstanding at the immigration center leads to the Americanization of their names to Taylor and Miller. Greed and threats of mayhem force Paul to seek refuge in the Union army. William and Edward leave a bright future in New York and flee westward where William finds romance with a young German girl in Milwukee. The frigid winters of the Midwest send William and Edward on an adventurous wagon trail trip to San Francisco. They learn that failure and sorrow can interrupt success and happiness in this fast paced novel.
