About the original book:

The Last Flight is a dual narrative, with Claire Cook, the wife of a renowned New York benefactor with political ambitions, and Eva James, a thirty-something woman embroiled in a massive and hazardous drug operation in Oakland, California, taking turns telling the story. For various reasons-Claire's husband abuses her, Eva's drug activities are being investigated by the feds-both women must go and start again.

Claire spends months planning her escape; she saves money and buys bogus identification documents. She intends to use a trip to Detroit on behalf of one of her husband's charities (a charter school funded by the Cook Foundation) as an opportunity and send her new identity documents and money to the Detroit hotel. Her goal is then to slip into Canada under the alias "Amanda Burns." However, her husband altered her assignment at the last minute, and she will now attend a conference in Puerto Rico. Her plan is ruined, and she is horrified.
