A marriage born in deceit can bloom into true love—or become the latest casualty of an ancient enmity...

Catarina Moreno only wants a few things in a husband: he needs to have his own ranch, be reasonably handsome, and, most importantly, must utterly adore her. Unfortunately her illustrious Old California family has higher standards—ones that Catarina fears no man will ever meet. But Catarina has no choice except to wait for the man who’ll gain her parents’ approval—until an American cowboy rides onto the rancho and tempts her to forget her duty… and herself.

Jace Merrill has always wanted one thing: a ranch of his own. When his powerful father cheats him of his inheritance, Jace strikes out on his own, determined to prove he’s his own man and the bonds of family are meaningless. After many years, Jace’s dream is finally within reach—as long as Catarina’s father never discovers Jace’s true identity… or how irresistible Jace finds his daughter.

Desire can’t be denied and soon Jace and Catarina find themselves in a shotgun marriage. But they’ll discover that ancient vendettas live long in Old California. They’ll find themselves battling old family grudges—and each other—to save a marriage neither wanted.

Jace and Catarina's story is a must read. Two strong willed people, a great story line, and lots of sexual tension make it very hard to put this book down. I can't wait to read the other books in this series because the author makes you want to learn more about the other supporting characters! 277 pages

I absolutely love the style in which Turner wrote this novel. This author’s writing is the kind that allows you to connect with the story. It’s mellow and inviting, allowing the story itself to really pack a punch. I found it to be endlessly enjoyable. Turner transported me back in time, allowing me to experience life on a Californian ranch. The complexity of life in a simpler time really shone through. This story absolutely broke my heart at times, yet it also gave me hope. The characters in this novel as well as their relationships with one another were fantastic. Not only do readers get to know the main characters and their families quite well, as if they were your neighbours, but they are also the type of individuals that you really want to get to know. The main couple definitely takes centre stage, but everyone plays an important role in the story. The trials that they have faced combine with the joys in their future. I also love the illusion to future novels in the series. I loved these characters and can’t wait to see what befalls them in the future. This novel may not have the intensity of a suspense or pack the shocking punch like erotica, but it was mesmerizing. By the end of the first chapter I couldn’t put it down and I still can’t stop thinking about it now. This is definitely a series I’ll be following closely and I’d highly recommend it to those who enjoy well written historical romances. Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

Oh My Word! This is not a cliffhanger, although it is suspenseful. The romance is complete and the bumpy love of the main characters different. I am looking for the mex installment of the family's quest to find the criminal that harmed their family.

enjoyed Summer Chaparral so much. Turner has created a beautifully detailed and genuine sense of place with Cabrillo, the Moreno ranch, and Jace's land. I could picture everything so perfectly and the imagery was descriptive in a poetic way without being overwrought. There is also a definite nice change in reading a historical novel set in California that deals with many of the issues that came from the merging of two very different cultures and expectations of people with the difficult racial tensions that came with it. I really loved both Jace and Catarina. They both have some fairly strong weaknesses in their character that cause them trouble, but they are also both honorable, strong, hard-working people. They have a great chemistry and I love the banter between them. I also appreciate how the book showed the difficulties in two people simply trying to meld their different lives and expectations into one shared existence. Their story is a snapshot of the bigger picture in California at the time. I also liked how the main conflict was revealed and dealt with. It's pretty much handled in exactly the way I've always wanted to see these types of situations handled. I'm enamored of the rest of the Moreno family now too and can not wait to read the other books in the series.

After reading dozens of books through the summer, into early fall, I must say this is the best! This is an intelligent writer with a keen sense of personalities and a marvelous author of word pictures. While reading this book, I came to really like and care about all of the characters within. She captures completely, the time frame, attitudes and setting of the era in which this book is set. Of all of the books I have read this year, it is the first I will hurry, not wait, to buy the next in the series. It is a full length book with a complete tale. She does leave an unfulfilled aspect to the story that gives the reader the option to find out more about, in the following book. I give this novel my highest recommendation.

Not the ending I expected. No happily ever after. I loved the characters. But no story about long lost family or possible baby. Sour ending.

Having grown up in Southern California with the rich history of the area still lingering in my mind I was thrilled to have won an advanced reader’s copy of this book through a librarything giveaway. I have to say that this took me back to other historical and books of the west that I once read. Ms Turner has created a first in a series of books that I would definitely want to read more of in the future This story is more than just a love story. Each character is created with depth and feeling and history attached. While reading the story I got to know the people in the story and felt I could sit down and talk to any of them and KNOW them well…only hoping I could impart to them as much as they gave to me through reading about them. The reasons that Jace and Catarina are they way they are and how they come together is believable. The descriptions of scenery are lush and delightful almost reminding me of a long ago author I once read, Gene Stratton Porter. There are some twists and turns and interesting bits that unfold through this love story but what really grabbed me was the sense of family and belonging and want and how they all came together in this wonderful story.
