I came across this book at Shakespeare and Company Bookstore, in Paris while on vacation. I must say that i'm very happy to have found it. The writing here is striking, nervously alive and scrumptiously seductive. The story is set in New York City just after World War II. The main character is Grady McNeil who is beautiful and rich - the kind of girl people want to be introduced to, the daughter of an important man. But the privileged society life of parties, debutantes and dresses leaves her wanting more. Summer Crossing is a precocious, confident novel by one of the twentieth centuty's greatest writers. If you like this book then you'll definatley like Breakfast at Tiffany's, also by Truman Capote.

It is, indeed, too brief a treat. The book that Capote never wanted published saw the light, and we are all the better for it. This is the typical case of an artist so monumentally talented that, even in a piece of work he may have underestimated, the public finds a unique treasure. By all means, read it. It is a startingly beautiful novel.
