Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
In a beguiling companion to last season's A Winter Day, Florian has again created a spare yet resonate mix of text and illustration. The book opens with a brilliant yellow sun rising over a city block. A family awakens early, breakfasts and sets off on a trip to the countryside. They take a dip in a swimming hole and go fishing at a small pond. After watching a rosy sunset behind a rounded hilltop, they drive back to the city. Stopping at a city park, the three children catch fireflies before they all return home under starry skies. Florian's clear line drawings, shaded with soft colored pencil and watercolor, are perfect foils for the brief, almost poetic text. This is an evocative mood piece that perfectly captures the essence of a summer day. Ages 3-5. (April)

PreS-Gr 1 On a summer day, a city family leaves the hot pavement and sweltering apartment behind and heads for the countryside and a day of cooling off in the swimming hole, fishing, and enjoying a leisurely day together. Florian's flat, full-color illustrations are filled with detail and yet are simple and uncluttered. In contrast to the muted, cool tones found in his companion volume, A Winter Day (Greenwillow, 1987) , he now uses the colors of summerbright blues, sunny yellows, and yellow greens, making readers feel the heat of the day. It's a warm, comforting story, told in rhyme, with no more than two words per pageperfect for reading to toddlers and for children just beginning to read. Trev Jones, ``School Library Journal''
