Children's Literature"This book is about cheerfulness," starts the text of this beginning reader, and indeed cheerfulness is infused throughout just about every page of this easy-to-read story. The Corner Kidsso called because they live on opposite corners of the same streetare ready to go to the water park on a hot summer day. When Alex's mom's car breaks down, the three friends have to make other plans. When Alex suggests that they head to the playground, Gabby and Three J are reluctant at first. Alex's bright idea ends up saving the day, though, and the Corner Kids have their own watery fun because "the Corner Kids could have a good time no matter what." Short one or two sentence chunks of text appear on their own pages, opposite full-page color cartoons illustrating the action. This format makes the book appear like a picture book (although the format is somewhat smaller) and makes this series a good transition to chapter books. This title is part of the "Rookie Choices" series. 2003, Children's Press/Scholastic, and Ages 5 to 8.
