Summer in the Park

All Music Guide - Stephen Eddins
Summer in the Park, a collection from EMI, features a selection of classical short works and individual movements that relate to the theme of summer or whose warm, carefree, positive tone evokes a summery mood. The album delivers just what it promises; listeners looking for a CD of music that's contemplative but cheerful shouldn't be disappointed. Most of the pieces come from the Romantic or post-Romantic eras, but there are also a few Classical and Baroque selections, and the 20th century is especially well represented, with works by Grofé, Delius, and Stravinsky, the most recent piece being Arvo Pärt's lovely, serene "Spiegel im Spiegel for violin and piano," written ...

Most of the pieces come from the Romantic or post-Romantic eras, but there are also a few Classical and Baroque selections, and the 20th century is especially well represented, with works by Grofé, Delius, and Stravinsky, the most recent piece being Arvo Pärt's lovely, serene "Spiegel im Spiegel for violin and piano," written in 1978. There are several other pieces of chamber music, including an arrangement of "The Swan" from Saint-Saëns' "Carnival of the Animals for cello and harp," but most of the selections are of orchestral music. All of the tracks come from EMI's deep archive of performances by some of the world's finest players, so all the performances are first-rate, and the recordings are from the digital era so the sound is always very good, up to the company's usual high standards. The album makes a good choice for listeners looking for a collection of relaxing, summery classical pieces, beautifully performed and recorded.
