Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In Melling's second book in her "Chronicles of Faerie" series, Laurel, the pragmatic, athletic twin is given the mission of rescuing her poetic, bohemian sister Hero. Hero may be dead from a tragic fall off a jagged cliff into the sea, or she may be a prisoner of the world of Faerie, a realm that Laurel does not believe in. The wise advice of an elflike clurican, "Act as if ye believe and see what happens," leads Laurel into a serious of exciting adventures, accompanied by the moody, intense misfit, Ian, who adds wonderful romantic tension throughout. Melling's tale offers a rich mixture of Celtic lore and a lush Irish atmosphere, enough plot twists and turns to leave the reader breathless and panting, and a lovely meditation on the interplay of two worlds, mortal and faerie: "Faerie needed humanity to protect and believe in it, while the Earthworld was nourished by the Land of Hopes and Dreams." The categories of right and wrong are also blurred in a deep and thought-provoking way. And if some plot points remain confusing, well, not everything in the wondrous realm of Faerie needs to be understood. 2006, Amulet Books/Harry N. Abrams, Ages 12 up.

VOYA
This second book in The Chronicles of Faerie series introduces a new heroine, eighteen-year-old Laurel, an American of Irish descent who travels to Ireland to revisit the site of her twin sister's unexplained death one year earlier, during a graduation trip they took together. Armed with her sister's journal, containing what appear to be references to fantasy worlds, Laurel finds her way into the Land of Faerie and learns that she must save the Summer King and see that the Midsummer Fire is lit. Together with Ian, her romantic interest from the previous summer, Laurel moves back and forth between Faerie and contemporary Ireland, carrying out her mission with the aid of an eagle king, a woman pirate, and a cast of fairy characters. Melling's background as a student of folklore is apparent throughout the book, both in the complexity of the legends in the story and in the nod to the profession appearing in the form of wise characters who are folklorists. The plot is suspenseful, and the descriptions of Faerie and its inhabitants are rich. A romantic story line will appeal to teens. This book is not a direct sequel to the first installment, which may confuse less careful readers, but others will recognize the sophisticated web Melling is creating with her chronicle. As with the first book, a glossary of Irish terms arranged by order of appearance is aggravating. KLIATT
In the first volume, The Hunter's Moon (reviewed in KLIATT in March 2006), Laurel's twin sister Honor was killed falling from a cliff in Ireland. One year later, Laurel is back in Ireland, plagued by what she can barely believe are faeries. She meets a rather odd roly-poly man who knows an awful lot about how Honor died. She is recruited to help rescue the summer king from his prison with a crow-like people and to force him to light the fire that will save the faerie kingdom. Laurel hopes that by acting as though she believes all this faerie nonsense, she can somehow bring her sister back. As fanciful as it sounds, it all works together to create a magical circumstance to charm any Celtic aficionado. Laurel is so real and grounded in the contemporary, it makes the fantastic seem plausible. The added love affairs from both Honor's past story and Laurel's current dilemma add dimension and interest. The use of actual Irish/Gaelic phrases (which are translated in the back) also adds a unique texture. (And what kid doesn't want to know how to say, "Kiss my ass" in Irish? By the way, lazy readers won't catch this—you only know what it means if you stop to look it up.) For those who already believe or those who can only wish.
School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up-A story that is lyrical and mesmerizing in subject and scope. In the year since her twin sister's death, practical and pragmatic Laurel has had dreams filled with fairies, giant birds, and questions about a king. While back in Ireland at her grandparents' home for Honor's memorial service, Laurel encounters a messenger from the Fairie realm who tells her that to save Honor, she must find the Summer King to light the Midsummer Fire. Hoping to bring her sister back, Laurel forces herself to share Honor's belief in Fairie and enlists the help of Ian, the village bad boy. Their relationship is complicated by the fact that she was on a date with him the day Honor died by falling off a cliff wall into the ocean. While trying to complete their task in the allotted time, they encounter a cluricaun who may or may not be telling them all he knows, ravens trying to stop them from freeing the Summer King, and unexpected things about Ian's true nature. Melling has taken Irish folklore and made it not only accessible, but also alive to readers unfamiliar with the stories. Through Laurel, an athlete who never had time for the fantasies that Honor loved so much, the tales are introduced seamlessly. Laurel's anger and indecision about being with Ian and his volatile anger bring these characters to life. An essential purchase for fantasy collections in which Tamora Pierce is popular.-Lisa Prolman, Greenfield Public Library, MA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Fans of The Hunter's Moon (2005) will enjoy this next installment. Featuring a new cast of characters, the crux of the plot remains the interaction between faerie and humans, and the dire consequences that attend those who cross the line between the two. Laurel and Honor are identical twins, different in personality, but as close as only twins can be. When Honor plunges to her death from the Irish cliffs, Laurel cannot help but feel responsible. Unable to shake her guilt, or be reconciled that it was an accident, Laurel sets out to find out exactly how her sister died. It isn't long before she realizes that Honor did find the faerie she'd always believed in, and that it's now Laurel's turn to take up the quest to save this hidden kingdom. Driven across Ireland by her own needs as well as those of faerie, Laurel races against time to find and free The Summer King, to save the realm of faerie and maybe even to bring her sister back from the crack between the worlds. A story about duplicity in many guises, the fight between good and evil, right and wrong, honor and fidelity, it can stand on its own. (Fantasy. 10-15)

    A Great Book

I love this author, and I usually don't like when sequels don't involve the characters from the original but this book was as good as the first and that's saying something.

    Wonderful!

This was a superbly written story from cover to cover. I never wanted to put it down! A great amount of detail went into making this story come to life. It allowing you to step into a world of fantasy while still being able to keep one foot in the grounds of reality. All the while, the scenery that was described throughout the story sounded absolutely beautiful! A very good read for any fairy/fantasy lover.

For those who still believe in magic.

Truly one of the best books I have ever laid eyes on, you will want to read it again and again. I had never wanted to believe in the magic of Ireland more that I did after reading this book. It's got it all- war, love, loss, friendship, and adventure.

    seriously good

O.R. Melling is a genious. She wrote the Summer King in an enchanting and clever way, drawing the reader into Laurel's tale and the search for the King. This book also might have actually outdone the Hunter's Moon, which was also a excellent book.

    Words too great to describe

Appluase for Melling! I think this is one of her best books yet! Though some people say that second books aren't as well as the first, I think that Summer King is an equal to Hunter's Moon. Brava for Melling for another magical tale!
