Hemingway is dead, Gretzky is born and 17-year-old Billy Carlsen heads upland from Toronto to the Muskokas in the summer of '61, to work as a short-order cook. On his own for the first time, Billy's ribald adventures toss him into more hot water than the Hilltop Cafe's kettles. His motley mix of new friends-Doc Livingstone, Bongo Charlie, Kitty Carson and the Port Town Players Band-instigate a series of hilarious escapades that Billy will never forget-if he survives them all.

Summer of '61 has recently been accepted as an official entry for the 2005 Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal.
