Overview

The summer that Patty Bergen turns twelve is a summer that will haunt her forever. When her small hometown in Arkansas becomes the site of a camp housing German prisoners during World War II, Patty learns what it means to open her heart. Even though she's Jewish, she begins to see a prison escapee, Anton, not as a Nazi, but as a lonely, frightened young man with feelings not unlike her own.

In Anton, Patty finds someone who softens the pain of her own father's rejection and who appreciates her in a way her mother never will. While patriotic feelings run high, Patty risks losing family, friends — even her freedom — for this dangerous friendship. It is a risk she has to take and one she will have to pay a price to keep.

When German prisoners of war are brought to her Arkansas town during World War II, twelve-year-old Patty, a Jewish girl, befriends one of them and must deal with the consequences of that friendship.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
From the newest book on the list to the oldest. As a teen, I reread this 1973 tearjerker every summer, longing for the romantic adventure of its heroine, Patty Bergen. That it is still in print and still taught in classrooms today is a testament to its emotional resonance. Patty is a Jewish girl living in Arkansas, where the U.S. military has established a POW camp for German prisoners of World War II. Anton is an escaped soldier whom Patty hides above the family garage. Patty's feelings for Anton are part romance, part friendship, and part father worship. Although it ends tragically (and how could it not?), their relationship gives Patty the strength to endure her emotionally distant and abusive family.—Angelina Benedetti, "35 Going on 13," BookSmack! 8/19/10

    AMAZING.

I had to read this book for school and at first I said to myself " Oh great. Another one of those boring books about soldiers for school" but after reading this book I had a whole other perspective of life. This book reminds us that no matter what we are or who we are we need to follow our heart and walk in the Lord's footsteps. This book also teaches us about the holocaust in a non-boring way but in a interesting way. Bette Greene writes this book so beautifully and makes me feel like I am standing next to Patty ( the main character) She makes the story so Life-like using objects such as Lysol Spray to Juicy Fruit Chewing Gum. Overall this book was definately amazing. I plan on reading the next book soon! I would definately recommend this book for all ages!! One of the best books I ever read. Hope this review helps! Now what are you waiting for? GO BUY THIS AWESOME BOOK!!! :)

most interesting book about the subject

This book tells you about a girl who befriends a german soldier.(who are despised for their role in the holocaust). It sort of teaches the lesson to not judge someone before getting to know them. Only reason i didn't give it a five star rating was because i didn't like the ending.

    Unforgettable Summer

Summer of My German Soldier by Bette Greene is a suspenseful, unusual, and inspiring novel. It depicts the story of a smart and intellectual 12 year old Jewish girl named Patty Bergen and her transition from a girl into a woman after helping a noble German prisoner of war during WWII.
Patty Bergen is a young girl who is affected by her parent¿s lack of love and rejection. Her parents are inconsiderate and hateful. Thankfully, Patty has someone in her life, the family¿s black housekeeper Ruth, who loves her unconditionally and is greatly appreciated by Patty because she seems to be the only person that understands her. Patty is also very intrigued by the war and current events. At the time German prisoners of war are brought to her small town Jenkensville, Arkansas. This creates animosity and fear among the people of the town.
Patty meets a German soldier named Anton and becomes smitten by him. Patty runs into problems when Anton escapes from prison camp, and she immediately helps him from being captured by helping him hide in a secret room their garage. This creates problems for Patty because a Jewish girl helping a German prisoner of war is not a thing anyone could imagine in her time. She defies her parents, peers, and religion. Patty looks beyond the obvious and helps Anton because she believes he¿s a good man regardless his German background.
I admire Patty because she endures many things a 12 year could never do. She acts with an intellectual mind and knows right from wrong depending on facts. She does not base her decision to help Anton on his race. Patty seems far more intelligent and less ignorant than her parents. She is strong and has her ideals set straight which is something I look up to. Patty did not inherit her parent¿s prejudice minds and cold hearts.
Summer of My German Soldier is very inspirational and makes us realize that we can¿t classify people based on their race, ethnic background, or religion. It motivates me to help anyone that is ever in need regardless of their appearance because they might have a valuable lesson to teach me in return.

Amazing book. I thought that Anton would make it to be a doctor, but, for some reason, Bette Greene decided Anton to be killed. I mean, seriously! And the LOVE between Patty and him is kind of disturbing. A so-so book

One of the best novels ever written!

This book is one of my all time favorite books. My brothers girlfriend dropped off a stack of books and this one caught my attention. I thought it tought a great lesson and i would like to read the companion to the book. I will admit that the ending wasn't to my liking but im hoping that if i read the companion it will explain things more. The main character, Patty, or Patrica is such a kind and warm-hearted person and i hated everytime she was hurt. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a good read and wants a book set during World War II.

Summary of Summer of My German Soldier

Summer of My German Soldier, a novel by Bette Greene, is a rather instinctive yet heart-warming tale about two banned lovers, a Romeo and Juliet of the twentieth century. This novel has a theme connecting to race and ethnicity, and shows that your label, whether it is Jewish or Nazi, does not determine the kind of person you are. The author used irony in the text because the book is about a Jewish girl loving a Nazi POW and her African-American nanny during World War two. This situation was very rare and ironic in the 1940s time period. I would recommend this book to people that value and respect ethnicity and diversity because this book because this book is about differences and ethnicity.

one of the most pointless books i have ever read!

This book is terribly depressing and poorly written and laid out. The description makes the book sound so good- but do not be deceived! The end is HORRIBLE and i would never recommend reading it. Although the author had good intentions the book did not reflect her effort.

A summer never to be forgotten!!!

The beginning of Summer of my German Soldier was not very captivating, in a sense of not interesting. It was hard to grasp my attention because I don't really like history! But as the book went on, I started to feel Patty Bergen's pain as she struggled to capture her parents love and attention. When she found Anton, things began to change for her as she found out what it was like to be loved and to love back. Even before Anton showed up, Ruth was always there and worked as kind of a mother figure for Patty. Ruth showed Patty love and tenderness towards Patty, which in my opinion Patty seemed to take a little for granted. I was expecting something bad to happen to Anton, but even when it happened I bawled as if I lost someone I love. The feelings Patty felt seemed to be mine when I was reading the novel. I cried when Patty did, I was joyous when she found out Anton felt the same way about her as she did to him, and I felt an emptiness in my heart when Patty's parents refused to love her as they did to Sharon. I will highly recommend this book for those who patient and love to read! It's a real tear-jerker, and full of hope. Patty taught me that love can be found at anytime and that when you find it you should cherish it like there is no tomorrow cause you never know how long you have with that special someone!!!!!

    Contrast with real life

'Summer of My German Soldier' was an outstanding book. The author goes into depth describing the characters personalities and how they live their every day life. Also, the contrast between the events that were going on at the time of the setting and the evenes that actually happened was magnificent. It really makes the book seem realistic and that the events in the book actually happened. The decision that Patty has to make between loyalty to her country and the love of her life, shows that you don't have to wait your entire life to find true love.

    a decent book!

Im Brian Resnik, I go to Burgettstown middle school. I had to read this book for my eight grade english class. I liked the book, but it started off so slow and it was not a start that wants me to read on. Although it started slow, it started to build more suspense later in the novel, and i wanted to find out what would happen next. Overall the book was decent and i enjoyed reading it for the most part.

    Awesome!

A couple years ago, the summer between seventh and eight grade, we had to read a book off a list and make a bookmark. I chose this one. I'm into history and it was the only book set in the past (although I would have prefered something in the 1800's). I thought it was so sad (it made me cry), but it was so good too.
