The Barnes & Noble Review
Mary Pope Osborne's Magic Tree House kids are on a pre-Camelot quest in the 31st installment -- and the third Merlin Missions book -- in the smash-hit series.

After Jack and Annie find a seashell challenging them to locate a "shining sword" or "Camelot's king shall meet his doom," the Magic Tree House spins them off to a jagged coastline, where their harrowing journey begins. Almost immediately, a mysterious Water Knight astride a horse-fish appears and takes them to the Cave of the Spider Queen, where the duo fight tidal waves and come face to face with the arachnid herself. After escaping and meeting two seals -- who turn out to be the magician Teddy and a selkie, a human on land who becomes a seal in the water -- they dive back under the sea and eventually confront their worst battle yet: an enormous, slithering sea serpent who guards the sword. Thankfully, Jack and Annie use brain power to get past the creature and take their prize, returning it to mighty Merlin and securing Camelot.

Chock-full of suspenseful adventure as never before, Osborne's 31st tale will keep fans happily hissing for what's to come. Now that the Merlin Missions books are done, kids will be anxious to learn what magical adventures await, and, as always, they'll appreciate the author's note that adds a helpful historical perspective on the book. Jack and Annie's serpent-y summer gives a whole new dimension to beach reading. Matt Warner

Children's Literature
In the third "Merlin Mission" from the "Magic Tree House" series (#31), Jack and Annie travel to a misty seacoast, reminiscent of Ireland or Scotland, to retrieve the Sword of Light. To accomplish their task, they—along with the reader—must solve the clues in Merlin's riddle and face such frightening sounding creatures as the Spider Queen and the Old Gray Ghost. Once in the mystical land, they meet their friend, Teddy, from the second "Merlin Mission," Haunted Castle on Hallow's Eve ("Magic Tree House" series #30) and a selkie, a creature who is seal in the water and human on land. The Spider Queen turns out to be helpful and the Gray Ghost merely the fog, but the Sea Serpent itself, who guards the Sword of Light, is a foe until the children realize that the revered sword is special because its purpose is peace, not war. Returning the sword to Merlin, they save the future of Camelot. Although this story is not as compelling or informative as others in the "Magic Tree House" series, it provides the usual adventure and plot that fans are so fond of. 2004, Random House, Ages 7 to 10.

If you like awesome stories, you should read Magic Tree House Summer of the Sea Serpent. I think this was a great book! The writing and the illustrations were by Mary Pope Osborne. In the story, two kids named Jack and Annie go on an adventure to a sea and fight a giant serpent, try to get a shiny, gold sword and even turn into a seals! I think this book was incredible! The story had a bunch of magic almost everywhere! All the pictures are amazing like the serpent, the sword, the jelly fishes, the seals, and under water. The story was the best fiction I ever read! The story had about 12 chapters in it. There are people that come from Camelot to where Jack and Annie are too! This book has some more challenging words in it. I think this book is good for boys and girls. I hope you'll like this book when you read Summer of the Sea Serpent!

I read the book Summer of the Sea Serpent. It’s a story about two kids who travel to a land and they have to find a magical sword. I think you should read this book because it’s full of adventure. It has a giant snake in it. There also is a giant spider. They find a magic sword. They travel to a world just like Camelot. They find two seals and one of them is Teddy. I think you should read it because it is a pretty good book. So this is my persuasive opinion about this book.

'Before night falls on this long summer day, A shining sword must find its way Into your hands and out of the gloom-- Or Camelot`s king shall meet his doom.' This is one of the magical books from the Magic Tree House series. The main characters in this book are Jack and Annie. The story takes place before Camelot was ever discovered.Merlin the Magician calls on Jack and Annie for help,to gain control of a magical sword of light which would be used for good and not evil. Jack and Annie found the sword guarded by the sea serpent. He promised them they could have the sword if they could tell him the real purpose of the sword. They remembered a line from Merlins rhyme.'Answer a question with love not fear.' Then Jack lost all his fear and realized the sword was meant for good. Then with a sparkle of light from the sword Jack said 'The purpose of the sword is not fighting! The purpose of the sword is peace!' I think this book is outstanding because, the author takes modern kids and moves them back in time, putting them in an old story. The kids make the old story more interesting. I like this author very much because she make a new story out of an old story. I recommened this book for boys and girls with imagination.
