Sun Rockabilly: The Classic Recordings

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Cook
Out of country and R&B came rockabilly. Sun Records covered all three styles with the likes of Johnny Cash, Little Milton, and Carl Perkins. Rock & roll also came out of the mix at Sun thanks to two of label head Sam Phillips' prized acts: Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis -- not to mention Perkins. Fortunately, for fans of these heavy hitters, there are literally thousands of reissues on the market. But for those with an ear for Sun's rich store of early blues and R&B sides, as well as the company's many mid-'50s rockabilly singles, the pickings were slim for years. Now, thanks to labels like Rhino, Charly, and Rounder, a wealth of obscure early rock & roll sides produced in Memphis are getting released. This Rounder collection of 14 rockabilly obscurities certainly is welcome, with its mix of relatively well-known cuts (Gene Simmons, Billy Riley, and Conway Twitty) and truly marginal sides (Ernie Barton, Ray Harris, and Jack Earls). Highlights include Warren Smith's classic "Miss Froggie" ("I got a gal/She's shaped just like a frog"), Barton's "She's Gone Away" (the Cramps and X must have heard this one early on), Tracy Pendarvis' exemplary train song "Southbound Line," and Hayden Thompson's fine rendition of the Junior Parker side "Love My Baby." Topped off with informative liner notes by Sun specialist Colin Escott, this solid if somewhat slim collection will work just fine as a first-disc choice for the rockabilly-curious.
