The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars

Overview

From an early age, we are awestruck by the shining beacons in our sky: we know the brilliant sun, we gaze at the dreamy silver moon, we watch the countless stars twinkling as if saying hello. So far away yet so present here in our daily lives, the sun, moon, and the stars mark the passage of time, bringing light and life, warmth, hope, and wonder. And they have inspired poets and artists through the ages to capture their meaning.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars, poems collected (including several of Wallace's own) and illus. by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace, an assortment of poems explore beacons of day and night. For "Pillow Song," by Russell Hoban ("Moony, moony, silver deep/ Ocean rock me to my sleep/ Morning sunshine in my cup/ Sing a song to wake me up"), Wallace shows two scenes, as one of her signature bunnies slumbers under a crescent moon, then wakes to the sunrise. The playful "Sunflakes" by Frank Asch imagines what it would be like "If sunflakes fell like snowflakes," for which Wallace portrays a "sunbunny" equivalent of a snowman. Children's Literature
Traditional poems as well as poems by known children's authors, including Frank Asch and Russell Hoban, are collected into one magical book about the special celestial bodies well known to the smallest child. These poems will whisk kids off to their nighttime world or wake them with hope and joy. The poems are short and full of imagery. Each one is rhythmic in its own way. With such a variety of styles compiled into one book, kids are bound to be able to find a favorite that they will want read over and over. Each poem is appealingly illustrated by Wallace's brightly colored and neatly arranged paper cut out collages. 2003, Houghton Mifflin Company, Ages 2 to 6.

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-This visually appealing book presents 33 well-chosen poems to highlight the natural orbs that provide a source of light and wonder. Included are selections by the author, as well as by Russell Hoban, Frank Asch, Christina Rossetti, Patricia Hubbell, Walter de la Mare, Aileen Fisher, and others. Each colorful page is beautifully designed, and the well-executed cut-paper collages draw readers into the poems, enhancing the mood suggested by the words. For example, "Star-light, star-bright" is illustrated with the image of a huge tree, its branches and roots reaching out across the center of the spread, and a lone star hanging in the sky. All of the selections are appealing, amusing, and gentle in tone. A perfect choice for storytime, this collection will also be useful for inspiring creative writing.-Deborah Rothaug, Pasadena Elementary School, Plainview, NY Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
