Young nature enthusiasts can take a hike-a flower-power hike, that is-or try out any of the other approximately 70 nature activities in Sunny Days & Starry Nights by Nancy Fusco Castaldo, illus. by Loretta Trezzo Braren, the latest in the publisher's Little Hands series. Cheerful line drawings on every page accompany the author's suggestions for things to do in rain or shine or gloom of night. (Williamson, $12.95 paper, 144p ages 2-6 ISBN 0-913589-94-2, Jan.)

PreS-Gr 4-A simple introduction to the natural world. Topics include weather, trees, sun, stars, seeds, and birds. Although many of the activities are tried and true, such as sand pictures or plaster animal prints, some ideas are new twists on old favorites. For example, stale doughnuts are covered with peanut butter and birdseed to make bird feeders, and a large sponge is used to grow a simple hanging garden. Each activity lists the easy-to-find required materials, instructions, and additional activities. Large, bold, black-ink drawings show active children displaying or making the featured activities. Like Jean Potter's Nature in a Nutshell (Wiley, 1995), this title points budding scientists down the right path. An enjoyable additional item.-Amy Adler, Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, OH
