Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 3 A formula book on the death of a young boy's dog and the boy's eventual adoption of a new puppy. The book is not adequate for a school curriculum on death. It does not enlighten children about the joys of pets, nor does it help to deal with death. It just notes death as a sad event. The book is simplistic, cool, and poorly written, reading like a ``Dick and Jane'' reader. It is clear but condescending. Events are described in the past tense, then in the present, then back to the past tense. The black-and-white photographs, many of which are full page, are clear; however, while some are moving, others seem quite staged. There are few books in this area, and there is a need for this type of book. However, it would be best to wait for another book on the subject. Ruth Amernick, San Francisco Public Library
