Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Before there is peace, blood will spill blood, and the lake will run red. StarClan's ominous warning haunts the dreams and waking thoughts of ThunderClan's medicine cat Leafpool. As the Clan recovers slowly from the badger attack in their new home by the lake, trouble brew in the darkness around them. A warrior cat series with an addictive bite.
Children's Literature
This sixth book of the “Warriors: The New Prophecy” series is a bit like a soap opera. In this part of the warrior-cats’ saga, ThunderClan becomes embroiled in one conflict after another. Having just finished fighting off an attack from a group of badgers, Leafpool must choose her duty to her clan over the love of her life. So, she becomes the official medicine cat. Duty conflicts with personal desire at more than one point in the story, but almost always the cats choose the wiser course. Brambleclaw, son of the rogue Tigerstar, also faces a difficult decision between remaining loyal to his clan and joining a greedy struggle for power over all cats. These conflicts--honesty versus treachery, loyalty versus desire, prejudice versus tolerance--give this fantasy novel at least a semblance of depth. Mentoring also plays an important role in the story, as Brambleclaw gains an apprentice and Leafpool shifts from apprentice to mentor. Overall, this is not the best-written fantasy book, but it is reasonably entertaining. At times, the conflicts feel exaggerated rather than sincere, and the action is a little hard to follow if you are not familiar with the past novels. However, new readers should catch on fairly quickly, with the help of a guide to the characters that is provided at the front of the novel. Reviewer: Laura Ruttig
Children's Literature
Fans of talking animal fantasy books (a la the "Redwall" series by Brian Jacques), this one is for you. But beware, if a reader cannot keep up with great numbers of characters with names that are quite a mouthful, you may want to pass on this one. Brambleclaw, Squirrelflight, Leopardstar, Mothwing, Tawnypelt, Yellowfang, Lionheart, Hawkfrost, Willowpaw, Mousefur, Hazelkit, Sorreltail, and Graystripe are but a few. Thank goodness there is a listing of the sixty-one different character names and their allegiances at the beginning of the book. If nothing else, reading this book, a part of the "The New Prophecy" series, will inspire in readers a new creativity in "naming." The basic premise is that in the aftermath of a horrific badger attack, the Clan must put themselves back together while deciphering a dark prophecy having to do with blood being spilled before there is peace. The book moves along at a steady pace, with a lot of emotional turmoil and interpersonal relationship struggles, but not as much actual physicality as one might expect. Closure does not come at the end of the book, leaving too many questions unanswered, in all likelihood to draw readers to the next title in this very long and drawn out series. Recommended for the intended audience, but more frustrating than satisfying for first time readers.

Meet the Author

Erin Hunter
Erin Hunter

Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. As well as having a great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior, shaped by her interest in astrology and standing stones.

Biography

Erin Hunter is the nom de plume of three British writers who create enthralling, animal-centric YA fantasies in the tradition of Brian Jacques's Redwall books. In 2003, they launched their bestselling Warriors series with Into the Wild, the story of a domesticated kitten who leaves the comforts of his human home to join a family of feral cats living in the woods. Introducing a captivating world where rival cat clans struggle for survival, the book was an immediate sensation with animal- and adventure-loving preteens. Since its debut, Warriors has become a genuine publishing phenomenon, spawning a string of six-book miniseries, each with its own distinct story arc.

The Erin Hunter collaboration is an unusual but highly successful one. Characters and story ideas emanate from editor Victoria Holmes, who keeps track of previous plot lines, ensures continuity, and coordinates the details of a complex and growing cast of characters. Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry take turns writing individual books; then everything is vetted again through Holmes, who checks carefully to make sure the stories are told in a single, unified voice. With different writing styles at work, this would seem a daunting task. However, in a 2006 interview, Holmes explained her modus operandi: "I think of it as being able to "speak Erin Hunter", like speaking a different language, and after working on [so many] scripts, I know pretty much at once if a line or phrase doesn't sound right."

Although the Erin Hunter books are written for young readers, they do not shy away from difficult material. The animals face life-threatening dangers and experience pain, grief, and loss -- sometimes even treachery within their own ranks. But the authors are always careful to reinforce positive messages about family, friendship, loyalty, and love. Independently, Holmes, Cary, and Baldry stay busy with their own writing and editing projects; but in 2008, they reunited for a second animal fantasy series. Seekers: The Quest Begins features a trio of bears from different species (black, polar, and grizzly), who join together for an adventure-filled odyssey that will change their lives forever.

Good To Know

Fun facts about "Erin Hunter" and the Warrior books, plus advice for aspiring writers:
Cherith Baldry and Kate Cary have always loved cats -- and writing fantasy stories! Cherith is particularly interested in the stories of King Arthur, with all those glorious battles, knights, and a courtly code of behavior. Kate is fascinated by animal interaction and the way you can read all sorts of hidden motivation into what cats do. She's also not afraid of describing the goriest scenes!

Says Victoria Holmes, "I love being one of the Erins and frequently dream of being a cat running through a forest when I am coming up with new story lines. Teaming up with Kate and Cherith on the Warriors books is an unconventional way of working, but we love writing the books together and it means we can produce them much faster than a single writer could."

They came up with the single name, Erin Hunter, to avoid confusing their readers by having books from the same series filed in different places on the bookshelves.

Erin's advice for aspiring writers: "Read, read, and read some more! Make sure you read a wide variety of stories: fantasy stories teach you about making up completely new worlds, crime-solving stories teach you about handling a complicated plot, stories with lots of characters teach you how to describe relationships. Also, write as many stories as you can, even if no one else reads them. And remember that the best inspiration comes from what's around you -- Kate and Cherith go for long walks through the woods to find new locations for the cats to explore. They also spend hours watching their cats -- and other people -- to see how they behave in certain situations."

Erin Hunter is the pseudonym for three writers: Cherith Baldry, Kate Cary, and Victoria Holmes

Warriors: The New Prophecy #6: Sunset

Chapter One

Brambleclaw stood in the middle of the clearing, gazing at what was left of the ThunderClan camp. A crescent moon, thin as a claw, drifted above the trees that surrounded the stone hollow. Its pale light revealed the dens trampled down, the thorn barrier at the camp entrance broken and tossed aside, and the wounded cats of ThunderClan slowly creeping from the shadows, their fur bristling and their eyes stretched wide with shock. Brambleclaw could still hear the trampling of the badgers as they lumbered away. The undergrowth beyond the entrance quivered where they had pushed through, driven off with the help of Onestar and the WindClan warriors who had come just in time to help ThunderClan.

But it wasn't the sight of devastation that pricked Brambleclaw's pelt and kept his paws frozen to the ground. Two cats he had never thought he'd see again were picking their way carefully among the scattered thorns of the entrance barrier. They were uninjured, their pelts sleek and their eyes alight with alarm.

"Stormfur! What are you doing here?" Brambleclaw called.

The powerful gray tomcat paced forward until he could touch noses with Brambleclaw. "It's good to see you again," he meowed. "I . . . I wanted to see if you'd found a place to live. But what has happened here?"

"Badgers," Brambleclaw replied. He glanced around, wondering where to begin helping his wounded and frightened Clanmates.

Beside Stormfur, the slender brown tabby she-cat brushed her tail against a long scratch on Brambleclaw's shoulder. "You're hurt," she mewed.

Brambleclaw twitched his ears."It's nothing. Welcome to ThunderClan, Brook. I'm sorry you had to travel so far to find us like this." He paused and looked from one to the other. "Is everything all right in the Tribe of Rushing Water? I never expected you to come visit us so soon."

Stormfur shot a glance at Brook, so swift Brambleclaw almost missed it. "Everything's fine," he meowed. "We just wanted to be sure you had found a new place to live, like StarClan promised."

Brambleclaw looked around the devastated camp, the stricken cats stumbling through the remains of their home. "Yes, we found it," he murmured.

"You said badgers attacked you?" Brook prompted, sounding puzzled.

"They came here on purpose," Brambleclaw explained. "StarClan knows where they came from, more badgers than I've ever seen in my life. They would have killed us all if WindClan hadn't turned up." His paws trembled, and he sank his claws into the bloodstained earth to keep himself steady.

Stormfur nodded. "Don't worry about telling us everything now. What can we do to help?"

Brambleclaw sent a silent prayer of thanks to StarClan that they had chosen this moment to send his old friend back to the Clans. He and Stormfur had been through a lot together on the first journey to the sun-drown-place, and he could think of few cats he'd rather have beside him now.

He turned his head as a thin wail came from a trampled clump of ferns at the edge of the hollow. "We need to find all the cats that have been badly wounded. Some will be on their way to join StarClan," he warned, glancing at Brook. "The badgers came to kill, not drive us out."

Brook met his gaze steadily. "Whatever they have done, I want to help. I have seen this kind of savagery before from Sharptooth, remember?" Sharptooth was a giant mountain cat that had terrorized the Tribe of Rushing Water for many moons, until the cats from the forest arrived. Stormfur's sister, Feathertail, had died in the fall that killed the savage animal.

"We'll do whatever we have to," Stormfur promised. "Just tell us what to do. Are you ThunderClan's deputy now?"

Brambleclaw studied a fragment of moss that was trapped under his front paw. "No," he admitted. "Firestar has decided not to appoint another deputy. He wants to give Graystripe more time to come back."

"That's tough." There was a note of sympathy in Stormfur's voice that made Brambleclaw wince. He didn't want any cat's pity.

Suddenly Brook froze. "I thought you said the badgers had gone," she hissed.

Brambleclaw whipped around, then relaxed as he saw a familiar, pointed, black-and-white face pushing its way out of a clump of dead bracken.

Stormfur touched Brook's shoulder lightly with his tail. "That's Midnight," he meowed. "She wouldn't hurt any cats." He bounded forward to meet the elderly badger.

Midnight peered at Stormfur with shortsighted eyes. Then she gave a small nod. "Cat friend from journey," she rumbled. "Good it is to see you again. And this cat from mountain Tribe, is she not?" she added, gesturing with her snout toward Brook.

"That's right," Stormfur meowed. "This is Brook, a prey-hunter from the Tribe of Rushing Water." He beckoned Brook forward with his tail; she went over reluctantly, as if she couldn't quite believe this badger was friendly. Brambleclaw understood her feelings; he knew Midnight as well as any cat, but it was hard not to look at her bulky shape without remembering snapping jaws, fierce gleaming eyes, and claws that shredded cats' fur like leaves in newleaf. . . .

There was the sound of heavy paws, and he looked up to see Midnight standing beside him. Grief and anger sparked from her berry-bright eyes. "Too late my warning," she rasped. "Not enough could I do."

"You brought WindClan to help us," Brambleclaw pointed out. "Without you, our whole Clan would have been wiped out."

Midnight bowed her head, the white stripe that ran the length of her snout gleaming in the faint moonlight. "Shame for my kin I feel."

"Every cat knows this attack had nothing to do with you," Brambleclaw told her. "You will always be welcome in this Clan."

Midnight still looked troubled. Behind her, Brambleclaw spotted his Clan leader near the center of the clearing, with Onestar and the WindClan warriors. He padded toward them, motioning with his . . .

    Whoa!

Through out the book was total internal conflict. In the end Brambleclaw's loyalty to his clan was tested w/ having unlimited power. Very dramatic. When he said he knew what he had to do. I knew what was going to happen. And i couldn't belive he did it! But it was for a good reason-but I was still really shocked when the prophecy was fullfilled the hard'and only'way...IT WAS SO COOL!

    Great Kids Book

I've read this to my Grandkids because I really felt the whole series has great lessons in them. It also helps kids to know that animals have feelings (and, yes, they know the difference between reality and fantasy)
But they will have more empathy towards all animals (I believe)
These books should be classroom reading.

    It makes me wonder . . . .

Now, I know a lot of you enjoyed this book a lot. I did too. Much better than devastating darkest Hour! But, then, Ive never been much of a first series fan. new prophesy is my favorate series. But, its VERY dramatic, too dramatic if you ask me.This book is the one that mentions my favorate charecter, Brook, alot more than most books, and yes, im including Moonrise even. But still, I wonder who betrayed both Brambleclaw and Firestar? I do think its Ashfur. Ashfur told his apprentice, Birchpaw, to warn Firestar of Blackstar at the ShadowClan border. And then, after being persuaded by Hawkfrost, he pushed his noble leader and his exmates father into the fox trap, then fled to tell Squirrelflight and Leafpool, and he was so scared because he knew that what he had just done was wrong and regretted doing it. Thats just how I see it. yes, I do think that leafpools the mother of Jaypaw . . . . it would be around the time that she was seeing Crowfeather, and would explain why she was suddenly so prickly around in Sunset. And I would also like to say that I think mothwing will have a kit with Smoky! Dont ask why, I just think thats whats going to happen, and the kits name will be Butterflykit, a pretty tortoiseshell with gray spots and blue eyes, and a brown tabby tail. Thats my theory!

    SPOILER ALERT FOR PO3!

I never... They just gave away something HUGE in Chapter 20 when it mentions... Leafpool being , well, plump. I dont think that shes fat, but she did just run away with Crow (hint, hint), and she might be... well, you know, expecting.
