The three stories in Sunset Lavaflies are very well written and imaginative. Each of the stories is so different from the others, showing Scott's ability to write convincingly from multiple voices - children, adults, men, women, and fish (yeah, okay - the fish don't really talk, but they communicate plenty). The settings also vary: the first story on a spaceship, the other two on regular (enough) land. Scott does a good job of letting the reader know about the setting and circumstances without being "explainy" about it, which makes the reading very smooth and easy.
The first story of the three left me with a lot of questions I'd like to see answered in another story!

This was a series of 3 short stories. They were fascinating. The first story is about a spaceship with children aboard who are convinced they have received a message from God. The children want to return to Earth to share their message, but the people on Earth are not so sure they want to hear. This story asked some interesting questions, however I felt the ending was a little abrupt. The second story was fairly short. It's kind of hard to describe without spoiling anything, but it involved a mother protecting her daughter. It was rather bizarre, but still entertaining.
The last story is about a man who discovers something extraordinary in the lake near his home. He's soon forced to make a difficult choice when the area is ravaged by drought. I think this was my favorite story of the three, but they were all good in different ways. I think short stories can sometimes be hard to get into, but that was not the case with these. They are an excellent way to spend some time reading. They stories are very fast reads, but they are definitely worth your time.

I enjoyed this set of short stories from Mr. Niven. Each story is good on its own, which I like. The stories don't seem to share a common back story, but the themes of family and frustration with the inevitable are in all three. I can see why he put these three together, which is something I like to see in an anthology that doesn't have a clear theme.

Sunset Lavaflies is a book of three science fiction short stories. I normally don't read short stories, but I made an exception here. The stories were very unique and intriguing. There's a lot of layers in the stories that really made me think. Also, the visuals that the author put in the third story were beautiful. These are not your typical science fiction stories, but they are definitely worth the read!

That is how I would describe this collection to other readers. The first story shows what can happen when faith takes a backseat and technology is allowed to run things. It's a sad situation in which what could happen is never allowed to be known. The second story reminds one of a folk tale, something straight out of an old book found in some dusty library or used book store. The final story is one that lifts your heart and makes you feel the 'wonder' of the magic that can be found if one only has the patience to wait for it. With regards to the writer and the intent not to give away too much this is as far as I'll go with the narrative. You'll simply have to read this collection of short stories to get the full affect.
Scott Niven is a masterful writer, able to weave colorful stories that spark the imagination to full fruition. I look forward to reading more of his work in the near future. Please read this book, you won't regret it!

A clever collection of thought provoking short Sci-fi stories. Although I generally prefer more quantity for prolonged reading pleasure Scott Niven does a great job of evoking atmosphere and emotion in just a few pages and leaves you pondering for some time after finishing the book. Perfect for anyone who has limited time for reading or just in need of a quick fix.
