Children's Literature - Leigh Geiger
This title is from the "Super Sandcastle State Stories" series. These books weave a tale involving non-human characters who take readers on a journey through their state. During their travels they introduce educational facts about state history, geography, culture and nature. Amusing color illustrations enhance the text, although they may be too juvenile for older readers. An alligator named Alex travels with his baseball team on a tournament which begins at Daytona Beach and winds south of Miami. Alex practices hard at each stop, hoping for a chance to play in the tournament. When the coach finally lets him play in the last game, he hits in the winning run. Sidebars on each page feature interesting state facts, tangentially related to the story, accompanied by a full color photograph. The book includes several additional features which could serve as useful tools for basic research in the primary grades. The story opens with a simple map of Florida that displays the path of Alex's team. There is also a reference page with additional state facts, an entertaining comprehension quiz, a glossary, and a list of suggested places to visit in Florida, also accompanied by a basic state map. There is even a very simple recipe for Sunshine Key Lime Pie. Reviewer: Leigh Geiger, Ph.D.
