Overview

What happens when a small girl suddenly starts turning green, as green as a cilantro leaf, and grows to be fifty feet tall? She becomes Super Cilantro Girl, and can overcome all obstacles, that’s what! Esmeralda Sinfronteras is the winning super-hero in this effervescent tale about a child who flies huge distances and scales tall walls in order to rescue her mom. Award-winning writer Juan Felipe Herrera taps into the wellsprings of his imagination to address and transform the concerns many first-generation children have about national borders and immigrant status. Honorio Robledo Tapia has created brilliant images and landscapes that will delight all children.

Eight-year-old Esmeralda is transformed into a superhero and flies off to rescue her mother, who visited Mexico without her green-card and is not being permitted to return to the United States.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
When an award-winning author pens a wonderful story, and an award-winning illustrator adds the pictures, an excellent book results. This has certainly occurred in this fanciful tale about young Esmeralda Sinfronteras. Upon picking a bouquet of fresh cilantro from the garden for her mother, who is expected to return from Mexico that very night, Esmeralda learns from her grandmother that her mother has been detained at the border in Tijuana, even though she is a United States citizen. When Esmeralda wakes up the next morning, she has begun her transformation into a superhero, the green-green kind who can fly to the border to rescue her mother and who can replace the border with fields of sweet, green cilantro. While adults might sense the political nature of this book, even children will recognize a story based in reality for many Hispanic families, thus making this an excellent addition for a multicultural lesson or classroom. The use of both Spanish and English text will also allow for a broad audience. 2003, Children's Book Press, Ages 5 to 9.

K-Gr 3-Esmeralda Sinfronteras, eight, worries when her mother does not return home when expected. Having crossed the border to Tijuana, she is being detained, Esmeralda's grandmother tells her, because she does not have a green card. The child carries a little bouquet of cilantro from her mother's garden into her room with her and wishes on the leaves, "shaped like hearts with wings," for her mother's return. The next morning, when Esmeralda goes to wash her hands, she notices that they are green. Washing makes them even greener-and that's just the beginning. Next her eyes, teeth, and hair turn green, and she grows to a great height-becoming Super Cilantro Girl, a sort of Jolly Green Giant who can fly to her mother's rescue. And rescue her she does, flying through the night to the border, making green plants grow over everything to foil the border patrol. The next morning, she wakes up to find that her mother is home and she is just Esmeralda Sinfronteras. Was it a dream? This intriguing fantasy raises questions and lets youngsters decide for themselves. Boxed text, yellow for English and green for the sound Spanish translation, is positioned so as not to interfere unduly with the brilliant acrylic illustrations executed in a primitive style. The story has considerable child appeal, and is a good discussion starter. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
