With a lively group of kindergartners, McMillan introduces the concept of comparison, with examples like yellow, yellower and yellowest or close, closer and closest. The children build a tower of blocks to demonstrate the various degrees of tallness. A single shouting girl is joined by her yelling friends to exhibit ``loud, louder and loudest.'' McMillan's photographs present the world of kindergarten clearly and realistically, capturing moments that are funny, interesting or universal. At the end, the author offers details about his subjects and techniques, rounding out this superlative book about comparatives. Ages 3-6. (Apr.)

PreS-Gr 2-- Happy, active children in a racially-mixed kindergarten class are used to illustrate degrees of comparison (positive, comparative, and superlative) in this visual grammar lesson. The excellent photos, three per set, move from small to large across double-page spreads, paralleling the comparisons. The three words per concept intensify from gray to dark black print and increase in size at the same time. For example, for heavy, a girl piles books into a boy's open arms, adding books till the pile is heavier, then heaviest ; for close two smiling students move from sitting together to sharing a shy, closest hug. Familiar kindergarten activities include reading, measuring, and building; comparisons include full, high, small, short, few, and long. The kids are delightful, particularly one little girl who stars on every page and whose bright yellow sweatshirt echoes the inviting endpapers. The photographs have clear composition, crisp colors, and strong light. There will be lots to discuss with young readers curious about the activities depicted and the words chosen. A deceptively simple book, masterfully executed. --Leda Schubert, Vermont Department of Education, Montpelier
