All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Commercially, Super Trouper, ABBA's seventh album, was another worldwide blockbuster. "The Winner Takes It All," its lead-off single, released several months in advance of the album in most territories, was a smash; for example, it was the group's 14th consecutive Top Five hit in the U.K. and their eighth number one there. The title track was also a British chart-topper (their last), as was the album, their sixth. "Lay All Your Love on Me" made the U.K. Top Ten, and "On and on and On" was released as a single in some countries, hitting the Top Ten in Australia. (Typically, American success was more modest, though the album went gold, and "The Winner Takes It All" was a number one adult contemporary and Top Ten pop hit.) Musically, Super Trouper found ABBA, always trend-conscious, taking account of the passing of disco and returning to the pop
ock sound typical of their early albums. Only "Lay All Your Love on Me" employed a dance approach. The title song had the kind of martial beat and pop sound more in keeping with the group that had broken through with "Mamma Mia" and "S.O.S.," and "On and on and On" paid homage to one of their chief influences, the Beach Boys, with an arrangement reminiscent of "Do It Again." Lyrically, there was a distinct sense of world weariness and melancholy, from the divorce lamentations of "The Winner Takes It All" to the dissatisfaction with touring expressed in "Super Trouper" and even the nostalgia for a simpler time in "Our Last Summer." For performers on top of the world, the members of ABBA were putting an unusual amount of what sounded like real unhappiness into their pop music. [The 2001 Australian reissue added "Elaine," a non-LP B-side, and "Put On Your White Sombrero," an outtake]

    Disappointment

I must say I was very disappointed with this cd. I don't know what happened to Frida's beautiful voice, but in all of the recordings from the 80s she sounded simply awful. Thank god Agnetha still has her crystal clear voice. Abba's work from the 80s isn't even that great. I do like the songs the Winner Takes It All and Lay All Your Love On Me, but as you can see, they were recorded earlier than the others. Andante, Andante and Me and I were exceptional, but there is no way that I could consider them to be anywhere near one of Abba's best songs. The only reason I rate this Cd three stars is because: 1) Agnetha's beautiful voice, 2)There were a few songs that were okay, and 3)I could never find it in my heart to only give Abba two stars because they are normally just so great. I love Abba, but this cd was just a huge disappointment considering Abba's normal standards of work.

    Super Trouper [Bonus Tracks]

SUPER TROUPER - Bright and bouncy tune about the dissatisfaction of touring, but how it is actually a thrill. THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL - Olympics-sounding song about a breakup. ON AND ON AND ON - Funky dancefloor number (albeit with confusing lyrics). ANDANTE ANDANTE - Blotch alert! ME AND I - Extremely powerful intricate journey of our thoughts. HAPPY NEW YEAR - How everything changes. OUR LAST SUMMER - Lovely song about a trip to Paris, and what a difference it makes. THE PIPER - Whoever thought that a flute could not add to dancefloor music is braindead. LAY ALL YOUR LOVE ON ME - Darkwave at its best. THE WAY OLD FRIENDS DO - Triumphant album closer about how what a joy life is. Perfect music to play while romancing.
