Starred Review.

The popular author of The A to Z Guide to Raising Happy, Confident Kids focuses now on the first critical years in a baby's life. Berman's direct and caring approach includes advice from parenting experts and insights gained from her own experience as a therapist and mother. Twelve key areas are covered, ranging from The Importance of Play to Creating Security and Predictability, and well-organized chapters are laid out with easy-reference suggestions, tips, guides, and breakout boxes where experts weigh in on topics: Too Many Screens in the Lives of Too Many Children, for instance, features a real-life examination of the methods two sets of parents use to cope with their toddlers at a restaurant, and the ramifications. Berman doesn't shy away from hot-button issues like exposure to TV and spanking, the latter allowing her to share 10 reasons why you shouldn't, including "Experiencing pain does not teach children to develop a conscience." It's not about raising an "überbaby," Berman notes, but about aspiring to be a super parent who raises an empathetic, resilient, and emotionally intelligent child. Her comprehensive, accessible book will arm parents with a valuable tool that will help them do just that.

Library Journal - BookSmack!
"Dr. Jenn," author of the award-winning The A to Z Guide to Raising Happy Confident Kids, here focuses on the first three years of life, presenting the latest research and tips from leading experts demonstrating how best to take advantage of this critical window of development that forms the foundation for attachment, a sense of self, and trust. In chapters covering such topics as communication, language development, security, and the importance of play, Berman does a good job of translating the research into practical applications and giving sample dialog to use with youngsters. Some of this is a bit over-the-top for most of us (e.g., reading three books per day in a foreign language), but this title is receiving a lot of publicity, and libraries will want to have it available. Recommended. Julianne J. Smith, "Parenting Short Takes", Booksmack!, 10/21/10

As my husband and I prepare for our first child, I have been researching various parenting books to try and prepare a gameplan for how we want to parent, and of the dozen or so books I have looked at, this one was one of the best so far. I was skeptical at first, thinking that this book would be another gimmicky exploration in bizarre, complicated and expensive things to press your child into becoming a super-genius. Instead, right off the bat the author simply talks about building blocks that a baby needs to be healthy and happy and smart and well adjusted. The great majority of these techniques are very simple and are how best to just spend time with your baby, interact with them and let them be babies. Some of her "building blocks" do involve some extra time and energy, such as teaching your child to be multilingual, but she breaks down some of the more daunting sounding tasks into managable parts that make it seem more do-able. I liked that all of the author's bulding blocks are firmly backed not only by anecdotal evidence of her own children and others, but also by her experience with many children as a child therapist and most importantly by many studies and well documented research.

Finally a parenting style I can be in tune with! This book is great for any parent who wants to raise happy healthy well adjusted children. I like the empathetic parenting approach where you can learn to have a better emotional and intellectual relationship with your child without all the drama. Starting from the beginning the book educates you in the way to avoid poor behavior pitfalls and to raise emotionally intelligent children that you can mold into respectful understanding people. I only gave the book 4 stars because it repeats some information, but it's an exceptional book!
