Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
"Meowie Wowie!" Supercat by Kate McMullan, illus. by Pascal Lematre, possibly the first board-book superhero for babies and toddlers, is out to "[make] the world safe for blankies." In comic-strip style, the oblong paper-over-board book features the fearless feline, armed with plenty of Super Milk. Colorful pen-and-ink drawings illustrate the action, in which Supercat proves that he is faster than a falling baby elephant, more powerful than a missing blankie and able to get a hippo into pajamas in a single bound. School Library Journal
PreS-With her constant companion, Super Mouse, her super cell phone, and "plenty of super milk," Supercat is all set to help "babies in trouble." After taking off from the Milky Way on the cow that jumped over the moon, the red-caped feline crusader is the answer to any parent's prayer. She and her mouse pal help several frantic folks by locating a lost blankie, putting pajamas on a reluctant young hippo, and calming a sobbing baby elephant. After each call for assistance, Supercat exclaims, "Meowie Wowie! A job for Supercat!" followed by "Glug Glug Glug" while she drinks her bovine beverage to re-energize her super powers. She's a kind cat with a good heart, but the repetition of the word "super" and the endless exclamation points wear thin after a few pages. The format, a long, narrow board book, appears to be intended for preschoolers, but the small, panel illustrations, with two or three vignettes to a page, will be lost on them. In spite of the brightly colored pictures, reminiscent of James Stevenson's work, this title is an additional purchase at best.-Maryann H.
