Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Once again the subtitle is a good description of what this book is all about. The sport of racing motorcycles had been around for nearly 100 years. Outdoor motorcycle racing on a dirt track is motocross. The sport grew in the 1940s and '50s with parallel development in Europe and the U.S., but it did not really start to attract attention until riders like Torsten Hallman came to the U.S. He really motivated U.S. riders to step up to the mark. However in the U.S. Supercross, or SX, the indoor version of motocross is what attracted the fans. This truly American version of the sport was due to the promotional efforts of Michael Goodwin, who staged a race inside the Los Angeles Coliseum. The sport was also helped by "Hurricane" Bob Hannah. From the 1990s to today, there have been other superstars who have been as big in racing circles as rock concert stars are to teens. Ricky Carmichael is one of them along with "Showtime" Jeremy McGrath. He performs amazing feats on his bike and has won dozens of championships. Another name race fans will recognize is James "Bubba" Stewart. In 2006, he was tied for second in the Supercross Championship. As in other titles in the "MXplosion!" series there is a history of motorcycles without which there would not be much sport and the changes that these powerful machines have undergone in the last two decades. Young readers will enjoy the last chapter, which focuses on the amateurs who will become the next generation of professional Supercross racers. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
