'Sweet Potatoheads', is a fictional restaurant that serves many varieties of prepared sweet potatoes, and is a place they visit often.

Chapter One

Time is precious and this fathers' time with his children was just that ... precious.

The Superdaddy in this story wanted to give to his children something he did not have growing up; healthy food to eat, and the ability to think, because you were able to read. Unfortunately the father had only gone as far as the eighth grade. He was therefore determined to ensure that his children exceed not only his, but their own expectations. He wanted them to have choices, have fun, and to be healthy productive citizens.

* * *

School was almost out and the up and coming high school freshman son and precocious 'almost middle school' daughter couldn't wait for summer vacation and for all of the camps and activities to finally begin. They signed up for various camps this year for the first time and would not be spending as much time with their Dad, as they had in the past.

The father had put together all kinds of plans for amusement parks, the beach, museums, and maybe even a special surprise getaway out of town.

Fun and wonder were building as the father and his son and daughter drove home from their school to their dad's house. It was their weekend to be with him and after asking all winter and spring, they now wanted to hear what they would be doing this summer. They wondered how they would manage all of it.

The father couldn't wait to tell them about all of the plans he had made for them once they finished school for the year.

There were only a few weeks left before school would be out for the summer....

It was their weekend with him AND THEY KNEW IT WOULD BE FUN.

"Daddy, where are we going for dinner tonight"? The boy asked.

'I wanna go to "Sweet Potato Heads", 'because I want some fries and their fries are the best!' The girl said.

'Daddy can we go there ... please, please, please ...?' she begged, with visions of eating them ...

"I just want mine baked this time ..., but in curly ques" ... the boy said with a smile on his face.

They drove into the 'Sweet Potatoheads' restaurant drive-up and waited for the waitress to come out to the car.

The family really liked this restaurant because they knew that sweet potatoes were very good for them and it was one of their favorite vegetables and desserts. It was the children's favorite restaurant to visit on their weekend with their Dad.

The waitress came up to the car to take their order.

'What are the vitamins that sweet potatoes have in them again'? The girl asked the waitress.

"That would be Vitamin's A and C, and it's got great fiber Dad!" the waitress said as she smiled ...

"What are you all having today?" she said as she showed them her tray of selections.

"Tell her what you all would like", said the father.

The family ordered their sweet potato selections, took them home, and prepared to have their dinner together, like always.

"Daddy, can I eat my food in my room?" the girl asked as she took her plate of food to her room.

"Why don't you want to eat with me and your brother? You know we always eat together" ... the father asked.

"I just wanted to do my homework at the same time so that I will have time to ride my bike".

"How much homework do you have Sweetie?" the father asked loud enough so that she could hear him from her room.

"I have A LOT Daddy! Math and spelling ... it's for extra credit for a summer program I'm signed up for". "We are going to Summer Space Camp for a week in July", she screamed from her room.

"We are studying N-A-N-O-T-E-C-H-N-O-L-O-G-Y," she spelled it out so that her Father could understand the word better, especially from the other room. That was the way that they explained new things to their Dad.... they would read it aloud to him and sometimes spell it out for him.

"I could never learn anything like that ... Nano nor technology existed when I was a child ... we barely had color TV ... no fax machines, no cell phones, not even a microwave oven," the father recalled.

"Didn't you know Daddy? I thought I told you the last time we were here."

"It's during our time with Mommy" ... she said and went back to her room.

"I brought you the permission slip the last time we were here Daddy.... I meant to read it for you, but I forgot".

She sat down on her bed looked down and cried, ashamed that he didn't know ... and that he couldn't read it for himself.'

After sitting there for a while and thinking about it, she remembered that her Daddy told them last visit that he had a surprise for them.

She headed back into the kitchen to get paper plates.

"You said we were going somewhere fun with you too Daddy, right? ... But it's a surprise ... I know...."

"I'll come and eat with you, Daddy ...", she said to make him feel better and joined him at the dining room table.

She gathered the food from the kitchen counter and took it to the table.

"I want mine on a glass plate, not paper", the boy said ... 'and yes I will wash it.'

"You are only going to wash YOUR plate?", the father asked.

"That is the only plate I'm eating off of Daddy, ...", but I will wash yours ... but not hers, she can wash her own..."...

"Me too, and I will wash my own, thank you very much ...", Here is a platter for the food and YOU can get plates and forks for us ... she told her brother.
