Although he was already a legitimate R&B success, Brian McKnight's crossover cachet was cemented with the Vanessa Williams duet "Love Is," which made a big splash in 1993. Since then, the singer-songwriter-producer has followed suit with his popular, ladykiller title tracks from Anytime and Back at One. Now the onetime member of the gospel group Take 6 strikes gold once again with his fifth solo disc, Superhero, and as its title suggests, the discs thrusts him into uncharted territory. Previously known for his wholesome romantic musings, McKnight now sheds his inhibitions with the explicit offerings "Don't Know Where to Start," which features thugged-out crooner Nate Dogg, and "When You Wanna Come," a bouncy, ...

Previously known for his wholesome romantic musings, McKnight now sheds his inhibitions with the explicit offerings "Don't Know Where to Start," which features thugged-out crooner Nate Dogg, and "When You Wanna Come," a bouncy, guitar-infused pledge to please his lover between the sheets. Other highlights include the falsetto-accented "Love of My Life," on which the crooner suggests Motown-era Marvin Gaye, and "My Kind of Girl," a syrupy duet with 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake. Still, the title track's heavy metal backdrop makes the boldest statement in McKnight's latest chapter of reflective and at times racy love songs. This versatile artist is obviously not afraid to spread his wings and soar past the boundaries of conventional R&B. Neo Brentacious
All Music Guide - Liana Jonas
R&B crooner Brian McKnight dropped his fifth studio release, Superhero, in 2001. The recording essentially offers up the same romantic and sensitive mid-tempo R&B love songs McKnight has become famous for. However, there are some choice departures by McKnight, reflecting his adventurous side. The title track is a steady and strong gasp! rock song, complete with electric guitars and driven percussion; it is slightly reminiscent of a gentler Living Colour style. The generally soft McKnight should venture into the rock arena more often, as he wears this hat well. McKnight also plays a wailing solo on the song to boot. Nice job. Elsewhere, the bonus track, "Groovin' Tonight," is a bouncing R&B jam with flows courtesy of Nate Dogg and backing vocals by McKnight. This is fun stuff. Returning to McKnight's standard fare, "My Kind of Girl," featuring 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake, is a sweet, breezy number, centered around light acoustic guitar playing, an instrument most fans don't associate with McKnight, who is generally shown behind the keys. The winning combination of the two singers' smooth vocals adds to the song's airy appeal. While the album is not groundbreaking, it does show consistency and growth by the talented McKnight. Is it super? No. Worthy? Yes.

I love this CD ... Brian's still got it!

Brian McKnight ''Superhero'' CD sounds amazing and his songs on this album really prove that. I listen to it no matter what kind of mood I'm in because it's such a feel-good CD. Plus his voice is so unique that it's nice to listen to someone who doesn't sound like any other singer out there today. I highly recommend rian's ''Superhero'' album .. it was worth every penny!

    Brian the Invincible!

What else can I say but ''unbelieveable?'' Brian has been my musical influence for quite a few years. His vocal ranges, mechanics, styles, and lyrics are incredible. I bought ''Superhero'' the week it came out. I fell in love with it right a way. He can play the piano better than any artist I know. He's simply amazing! By the age of eight, he taught himself how to play the guitar and piano. Now that's what I call talent! I plan to follow in the footsteps of my idol, and I hope to be a musical artist someday. Brian can sing higher notes than most professional women can! He's so talented. I strongly urge you to go buy his CD's. They're great! I think he should be more popular than he is! Hopefully, someday you will see me on the music scene, and I hope to be considered the next Brian McKnight. Go, Brian! You're the best!

    At His Best.....

Brian McKnight only manages to get better and better lyrically and vocally with every one of his albums. His songwriting abilities are equal to those of Quincy Jones and Babyface and he can really sing with the emotion that the song requires. The first single, ¿Love of My Life¿ is probably one of the best on the whole album, written for his daughter, it expresses the loving emotion between two people, not necessarily lovers, can really hold for one another. ¿Whatever You Want¿ and ¿What¿s It Gonna Be¿ have great R&B rhythm, but also carry upbeat lyrical content that steers us away from the sultry R&B we are so used to with Brian on previous albums, believe me, it is a nice change. Although I think of Brian as everything but mainstream pop, I have to agree that the duet with Nsync¿s Justin Timberlake is very good. However, I must admit that the titled track ¿Superhero¿ is a little too far out for me to adjust to and remains as my least favorite song. Getting beyond these songs, you can find the ¿old¿ Brian on tracks like ¿Get Over You¿ and ¿Still¿ and it feels great to reminisce on the old days with his soulful voice. Overall, this is a great album. I didn¿t think that I needed it in my collection until I heard clips of it and realized that Brian can always bring us new stuff and it definitely is a step higher than the previous one. I guarantee that you huge fans will not be disappointed.

The Same Old Same Old....FABULOUS AS ALWAYS!

I just wanted to say that I would recommend this album to anyone. Brian McKnight is a true artist. No one has mentioned how beautiful the PRELUDE was. It's the first track, but people only comment on the tracks with ''words''. CLASSICAL?? Is there no end to this man's skill and brilliance? Obviously not. In these patriotic times, the patriotic undertone to the Prelude is awesome and definitely a positive step out from the ordinary. I will continue to purchase each and every Brian McKnight album, whether I preview it or not. I know it will always be a quality recording.

    Brian saves the day

When it comes to singer/songwriter/producers, there is no one out there right now that compares to Brian McKnight. He has a true reverence for the art of songwriting, and he shows his amazing abilities again on this album. He is a superb balladeer. And his vocal phrasing is matched by no one. This is Brian in top form. Check out my favorites: ''Biggest Part Of Me,'' ''Love of My Life,'' ''Whatever You Want'' and the title track. Brian saves the day again!!

    WELCOME BACK BRIAN

After listening to this cd, it is no doubt that Brian is back on the scene. This time he has decided to spread his wings a bit and enlisted the help from other artists such as Justin Timberlake of N'Sync and Nate Dogg to accentuat e what has become what is considered a good comeback. With songs such as ''Love Of My Life'' and'' Whatever You Want'' where he takes samples from Prince's ''The Beautiful Ones'' as well as K-ci and JoJo's'' Don't Rush'', he is giving us again what makes him a trademark crooner to us to this day. The hard rock like sound of the title track gives him a little but not a whole lot of edge to his regular sound. The bonus track groovin tonight with the St. Lunatics which is also in their cd as well also gives you a feel good sound. all in all it is a good cd and is worth getting

    More than Wonderful...

This album proves that Brian McKnight has still got IT. This album is one of his best works to date. My favorite song on this album is ''Love of My Life'' and ''When You Wanna Come''. He also mixes it up with the St. Lunatics (yes, Nelly's entourage) on a bonus track. He has the ability to be classically sexy, not with raunchy in-your-face lyrics. This album can be played straight through. It is a delightful breath of fresh air. Thanks Brian for a job well done.

    BRIAN THE SUPERHERO

You don't understand just how much the music of this album will move you. It is unbelievably touching and irresistably deep. I speak on behalf of all women out there who need to hear sweet words from a man who KNOWS how to really talk to women. As for men who are looking for some REAL passion to catch a woman's attention, this is ALL you need. I fell in love with his music about 10 years ago and still love every beat and word of it. He has such compassion and understanding. The music really makes you feel the mood. This album has new aspects of his music syle and still sounds awesome in a new way! It didn't hurt his reputation for being such a creative artist. He is the MAN, and thank God for his one-of-a-kind talent!

    R&B at it's finest!!!

The songs on this albums, like the songs on his previous albums are simply breathtaking at moments. The piano playing is mastered again. The words, the sounds, the music is just sensational.

this is indeed a talented musician who is just here to display all his skills, vocally, instrumentally and has proved to be one of the best in this music industry. I have enjoyed listening to almost all of the tracks, and certainly all other music fanatics will love this album.

    My Superhero

I simply loved this CD. I have been a fan of Brian's since his first release and have remained faithful ever since. Although the whole disc is great, the stand-outs are Love of My Life, My Kinda Girl, Still, and my favorite... Biggest Part of Me. This is a great CD for your music collection. If you really enjoy him, talk with other fans at brian-mcknight.com.
