Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mary Hynes-Berry
Stone Arch Books appears to be trying to tap into the popularity of the Golden Age of Comics Superheroes, along with the modern interest in graphic novels. But the underlying agenda seems to be creating something reluctant readers will pick up. The story is told in traditional text features of paragraphs and all the conventions of punctuation. But each facing page has a full color illustration that will look familiar to anyone who remembers the classic comics but modified enough not create copyright problems. At the end of the book, there are discussion questions and writing prompts. There is also a glossary that includes a pronunciation guide, both of which could use some editing: (emitted is given as i-MIT-id; winced is defined using the word "flinched" which does not seem more accessible to an ELL or poor reader). In this particular book, Superman has to contend with an intergalactic bounty hunter, Lobo. For Lobo, this is a just a job, ordered by two evil aliens. But when Lobo gets trapped along with Superman, the two join forces and turn the tables on the bad guys. While the idea of hooking readers with this kind of book is commendable, the execution leaves room for improvement. Reviewer: Mary Hynes-Berry

Meet the Author

Blake A. Hoena grew up in central Wisconsin, where, in his youth, he wrote stories about robots conquering the Moon and trolls lumbering around in the woods behind his parent’s house — and the fact that the trolls were hunting for little boys had nothing to do with Blake’s pesky younger brothers. Later, he moved to Minnesota to pursue a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Since graduating, Blake has written more than forty books for children, including retellings of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and the Perseus and Medusa myth. Most recently, he’s working on graphic novels for Sports Illustrated Kids and writing stories about superheroes.

Rick Burchett has worked as a comics artist for over 25 years. He has received the comics industry's Eisner Award three times, Spain's Haxtur Award, and he has been nominated forEngland's Eagle award. Rick lives with his wife and two sons near St. Louis, Missouri.

Lee Loughridge has been working in comics for more thanfifteen years. He currentlylives in sunny California in a tent on the beach.
