Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"JMS has created a brilliant breathing world of consequence and DC is delivering this vision in epic scope.. . . Masterful. . . . truly extraordinary” – AIN’T IT COOL NEWS

“This is a Superman for the 21st century. With SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE, Straczynski and Davis inject the folk tale and legend that is Superman’s origin with a modern, vital and forward-looking energy that makes for a refreshing, epic and challenging super-hero adventure. . . . SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE channels the best tales of Superman with a look toward the future, by two of the brightest talents the industry has to offer.”—/FILM

“Excellent.... From its poignant domestic moments, delivered in mostly warm, fuzzy flashbacks, to its blockbuster battles, Straczynski’s Superman: Earth One renders like a feature film just waiting for adaptation. “—WIRED

“Artist Shane Davis rightly gives the book a photorealistic look to drive home that this is more science fiction than superhero romp. . . This is a handsome, rock-solid Superman fable that gets to the scifi pith of his legend.”—io9

“Brooding.”—CNN

“What do you get when you combine Twilight and a classic superhero? The new Superman.”—THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

“The new Superman doesn’t sparkle, but he does brood and smolder. Artist Shane Davis has created a moody 20 year-old version of the iconic hero who rocks a hipster look.”—NEW YORK PRESS

“Shane Davis really shines in this book. . . . The art comes alive with energy and design”—IFANBOY

“Davis provides sleek figures, intense detail, and subtle integration of current hairstyles and fashions (including a nip and tuck to the old supersuit itself) that do the lion’s share of the contemporizing … [and] Straczynski . . . distinguishes the work, humanizing the dynamic between characters and adding a compelling twist of melancholy to young Clark Kent’s search for purpose.”—BOOKLIST

“Straczynski, a master of building characters, brings depth and emotion to the Man of Steel and Davis’ artwork is a joy to behold.”—AM MEW YORK

I've stayed away from comic books for the last few years, though I still read a few Batman, Green Lantern and Superman every once in a while. I was really looking forward to this re-imagining of Superman, and I have to say it has exceeded even my wildest expectations! It has everything that made me fall in love with superheroes in the first place: Strong characterization, deep emotional impact, flawed yet noble heroes struggling against seemingly insurmountable evils, gorgeous art, expert pacing, and above it all, LOTS OF HEART. I recommend this book to everyone who's ever dreamed a man can fly, and especially to young readers looking for better heroes in today's world.

this does at the beginning raise a question that should be very obvious. why the hell would you become a superhero when you could just become rich doing ANYTHING else??? the characterization is great. the Art is Perfect. Everything is familiar but better done if you read superman and if you have not its easy to get into and fun to see. it a great first step in what i hope will be more to come. i agree that villain introduction seems abrupt but he feel like the tip of a much bigger iceberg.

Superman done right! At a time when Superman seems to get rebooted every five years or so, this take on the character is a breath of fresh air for those of us who are sick of the constant reboots and want a return to the simplest version possible, which this is! His origin is retold, of course, but the twist here is there is no twist! No gimmicks, no "add-ons", just a simple retelling of a baby who fell from the stars who was found by a loving farm couple who discovered he had fantastic powers. After young Clark moves to the big city, he must choose the direction his life will go. Will he use his powers to help those who need him, as his folks wish? Or will he use them for his own benefit? But a connection to the destruction of his home world may make that choice for him. The re-imagining of classic characters like Jimmy add to this fun read as is their take on Perry. If the story has a weak point, it would be that the villain is somewhat generic but all in all a great read and a great take on Superman!

It's been a long time since I've read a comic and I just have one word to discribe this reading experience...AWESOME!! This Superman story I hope will just get better.

I wanted to try a graphic novel on my Nook and this was my first. I am a comic book fan and a superman fan so this was a good choice. The book itself was good but the Zoom feature left a lot to be desired. It would zoom in on one portion where the dialog was and skip the rest. You lost some of the beauty of the book by trying to read it. But all in all I liked the book.

This is the best Superman story I have read in years. Yes it's his origin told, for the milionth time but it's such a good and compelling story.

I would give this graphic novel 5 stars because I really liked the following things: 1. the painting part - it's really good - I am not a fan of free painting style where characters look very weird, i like when proportions are good and remind very good animation. so i think everybody will like the painting style in this novel. 2. I think after watching "Man of steel" people would like this particular GN because it feels the main character's doubt about what he should do in this world - so it's that famous "to be or not to be" question. I think its very cool that author uses it as the basis for this novel, because Superman is a person who is very doubtful about what he does. And people need him, when they don't need he loses his iconic appearance. Of course there're many classic graphic novels about superman and I have not read many of them, but I truly recommend this one - because it's good in many ways and not disappointing.
