First Thunder is a nice little story about the first meeting between Superman and Captain Marvel. Judd Winnick does a good job capturing Marvel’s innocence and Superman’s grandiose stature. Since this story takes place in the past you know the stakes aren’t high but the use of villains in here is very good, especially Dr. Sivana. He’s shown to be Luthor level evil. The art by Joshua Middleton is serviceable but he’s capable of more. At times, his faces look awkward. Overall, a decent book with some nice emotional touches between the two heroes with a fantastic ending.

While I am not that fond of the cartoony art style, this story shows both the Big Blue Boy Scout and the Big Red Cheese in character in an entertaining enough fashion to make me review it. That is hard to do. Most interactions between Superman and Captain Marvel, in comics or cartoons, involve the two fighting - given their similar level of power, not without reason. But I think it haappens a bit too often. It is still wonderful to see the two cooperate, a cooperation that shows off their differences, both in power and in (however minor) outlook. The look at an early Dr. Sivana is effective as well. I will also say Superman calling the wizard Shazam out on using 10 year old Billy Batson was great, even if they cut the argument far too short. The implication of Superman becoming Billy's mentor makes the shortness of the argument mostly forgivable. In other words, this story is excellent. I recommend it highly
