Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, Everlast, Eagle Eye Cherry, Dave Matthews, and Goodie Mob's Cee-Lo all lend songs and voices to a disc that's mostly a more reflective, contemplative version of the sound that originally made Santana famous. Album opener "Da Le Taleo" is hot enough, especially during the main man's spirited solo, but Santana's mojo works on a more mellow vibe during Matthews's sentimental "Love of My Life" and Everlast's pensive folk-rocker "Put Your Lights On." More spirited is Jean's slow, smoldering "Maria, Maria" and the soulful Hill production "Do You Like the Way," especially when Cee-Lo steps in with his best Otis Redding impression. Ultimately, despite some missteps, Supernatural succeeds in achieving its goal of bringing new fans to an old sound and vice versa, which is an admirable feat indeed.

Santana was still a respected rock veteran in 1999, but it had been years since he had a hit, even if he continued to fare well on the concert circuits. Clive Davis, the man who had signed Santana to Columbia in 1968, offered him the opportunity to set up shop at his label, Arista. In the tradition of comebacks and label debuts by veteran artists in the '90s, Supernatural, Santana's first effort for Arista, is designed as a star-studded event. At first listen, there doesn't seem to be a track that doesn't have a guest star, which brings up the primary problem with the album -- despite several interesting or excellent moments, it never develops a consistent voice that holds the album together. The fault doesn't lay with the guest stars or even with Santana, who continues to turn in fine performances. There's just a general directionless feeling to the record, enhanced by several songs that seem like excuses for jams, which, truth be told, isn't all that foreign on latter-day Santana records. Then again, the grooves often play better than the ploys for radio play, but that's not always the case, since Lauryn Hill's "Do You Like the Way" and the Dust Brothers-produced, Eagle-Eye Cherry-sung "Wishing It Was" are as captivating as the Eric Clapton duet, "The Calling." But that just confirms that Supernatural just doesn't have much of a direction, flipping between traditional Santana numbers and polished contemporary collaborations, with both extremes being equally likely to hit or miss. That doesn't quite constitute a triumph, but the peak moments of Supernatural are some of Santana's best music of the '90s, which does make it a successful comeback.

    OVER THE TOP

    Santana still reigns supreme over his guitar's long, wailing, seductive notes. There's something here for everyone. If you don't like this album, you don't like music, so just fo'get about it.

    SANTANA: MASTER MUSICIAN

    Carlos Santana is one of the greatest rock musicians and guitarists of our lifetime. His guitar emits a searing, soulful, and peaceful vibe which infects the listener at once. Santana's music and musical collaberations are a shining beacon to the power and beauty of the human spirit, no matter its form.

    Stunned by those who hate this album

    I am totally shocked by those who say Carlos sold out. If he'd actually Sold Out, all the music would have been written by other artists. He would have been the back-up guitarist (imagine that), back up vocalist, etc. etc. Instead of looking at the negative, look at it this way. He brought together many people, from so many different fields of music, including Eric Clapton (A Music God if there ever was one) and created one of the best rock albums ever created, if not the greatest. I have nearly 700 rock C.D's and this is still, two full years after it's release, on my top five. Also I really don't think I could, even with a gun to my head, pick my favorite song on this album

    Santana is back!!!

    Santana is back and better than ever. This album is full of excitement and interesting collaborations. Although the guitar is tame on some tracks, over all Carlos has proven himself to be a force to be reckoned with. I only wish that more rock artists could make albums that are both this enjoyable and musical at the same time.

    SUPERB!

    One can't begin to translate and put into words the energy and intelligence behind the making and sound of Santa's Supernatural CD. This is a Classic. Althouth his past work has proved to go beyond the scope of any particular genre of music, Supernatural is clearly limitless and genreless (if there's such a word) it's all inspiring and very enlightening, ecclectic even.

    The new 'monster hit' of the world.

    Carlos Santana put an end to Michael Jackson's long reign as king of the world once and for all with his most recent release. Most of the songs, in particular 'Smooth,' 'Put Your Lights On,' and 'Maria Maria,' are masterpieces, and the great artists Santana has chosen were no exception to the rule. No wonder the album has surpassed Michael Jackson's 'Thriller,' both in album sales and in award victories, as the new monster hit of the world.

    Great for him to be back.

    I have followed Carlos from the time Iheard him on the radio back in the 70's.All his music back then had one thing in common FEELING.Samba Patti,Soul Sacrifice Jingo contained high levels of feeling ang percussion.It was his uncanny blend of feelings trasformed to his guitar mixed with the percussion that sent millions of souls to higher plains of a musical journey way above anyother height that they ever reached.Now that he has returned and hopefully realised how many people really missed him that he will now becomeon his next cd The Calos Santana I know. Pump the rythym let it rip the way you know how.Supernatural was a good album for those who do not really know Santana but for those who really know him and his trueness would know that if he feels what he had back in the 70's .Look out sales records .

    SooooSmooth!!!!!!

    I am a 47 year old female, and I use to listen to Carlos Santana when I was 17, but this album tops it for me. I am so pleased that Carlos has reentered the music world again. Rob Thomas's singing of Smooth is so hot!!!! I hope they work together again soon!!!

    Santana's Musical Master Piece

    In Santana's new album Super Natural it has broke down all bounderies- latin, jazz, R&B,hip-hop, rock, and romatic music. You name it you've got it! This Santana album has came from the fires of redemption to show where music has came from and how music should sound. I so very much appriciate this album because it has come straight from the heart of all who collaborated with the Santana group. I say this because every time I listen to it, it has given me insperation in every avenue of life. It accomidates you, in what ever mood you are in. This is why I feel it is easily a classic of all-time and never tires the ear.

    I grew up with santana and i am so glad to see that this generation has recceived the oppurtunity to enjoy with me and my generation one of the soulful latino groups that has brought so much wonderful dance spirited music over the years;and they maintain their abilty to do so. good luck

    The best

    This is the first time I ever listened to a Santana cd and I don't regret a moment of it.I did not know that this man was so talented. I can recommend this cd to everybody.

    The ONE and ONLY

    For so many years as I grow up I listen to him, I saw him in Hawaii in the 7o's which him and Buddy Miles recorded that album live from Diamond Grator on New year all day sunrise to sunset concert. He was great and still one of the best on his guitar hes own style no one, I MEAN NO ONE can play like him. Thanks Carlos for all the great sounds that you put out on tha past and the present. And bring out another ONE, and do that SWEEP again, I love it. Im from Samoa but that don't mean that we dont listen to his music.
