Overview

Meet Stella Batts. She's in third grade, she wants to be a writer, and her parents own a wonderful candy shop. Life should be good, right? And now she's back and ready to start writing her eighth book about her favorite subject--her life! In Superstar, Stella gets the chance to audition for her favorite television show, Superstar Sam, after a casting director spots Stella out for dinner with her family. He said she is perfect for the role. Stella rehearses her lines until she knows the part by heart. Her little sister, Penny, is jealous but sometimes older sisters get to do things little sisters can't. But the audition doesn't go as planned. Stella was sure she had the part. Now will she ever get a chance to show her acting skills and meet her favorite actress?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marisa Robinson
Eight-year-old Stella loves to write and keeps her notebook on hand to jot down stories. In this eighth installment, while dining at a restaurant with her family, a casting director overhears her and her sister Penny and informs them of an audition for a television show. Not just any show but “Superstar Sam,” Stella’s favorite! Unfortunately Penny gets the role instead and Stella has a difficult time dealing with the attention Penny receives. Sheinmel’s story highlighting everyday family and school dynamics of a third grader will appeal to young readers. Bell’s simple pencil illustrations are nice additions for that budding chapter book reader who still enjoys pictures. Although it is the eighth book in the series, it is not necessary to have read the other seven. At the same time, the back-story is brief and the chance to really attach to the characters takes some time. Reviewer: Marisa Robinson; Ages 6 to 8.
